Erosion  Water, in either gas, liquid, or solid form can change the surface of the earth, it can even carve rock!  Erosion is the transportation of broken down rock fragments (sediment) by water, glaciers, gravity, and wind. It can happen slowly or rapidly.

Glaciers Glacier move very slowly – usually between m per year. As they move they can scratch and scrape the land they are passing over. These marks are called striations. Can also carve out whole valleys (Like the Okanagan)

Some of these features are carved out by glacier movement:  Bowl-shaped valley at the head of a glacier = Cirque  Narrow ridge of high ground between two cirques = Arête  Pyramid-shaped peak located between three cirques = Horn  Narrow inlet of ocean between steep cliffs carved by glaciers = Fiord  U-shaped valley cut off by a bigger valley created by a larger glacier = Hanging Valley Glacial Features

Other features are caused by being deposited by glaciers:  Large boulder deposited on the ground by a glacier = Erratic  Ridge of material deposited by a stream running under a glacier = Esker  Ridge of rocky material deposited by a glacier, found at the sides and farthest advance of a glacier = Moraine  Material deposited by water from melting glaciers = Outwash

1) Running Water o Running water can physically break down rock into small particles called sediment. o Water movement can also leave deposits. This is also a slow process. o A Delta is an area where sediment had built up where a river enters an ocean or a lake. Erosion by Water and Ice

2) Gravity Erosion can happen rapidly by landslides and avalanches, which are caused by gravity. a) Landslides occur when rain causes soil and rock material to become heavy and gravity causes earth to quickly slide downhill. b) Avalanches are landslides of snow and ice.

Weathering - is the process of breaking down rock into smaller fragments. There are three types of weathering: physical, chemical, and biological.

1. Physical Weathering  Also called mechanical weathering.  Rocks broken down by physical means, composition doesn’t change  Mainly in climates with lots of moisture and with large temperature variations (day/night or summer/winter)  When water freezes, it expands. If in a crack in a rock and it cools the ice can expand the crack = ice (or frost) wedging

2. Chemical Weathering  A chemical reaction causes rocks to break down or decompose.  The minerals in the rock change their composition and this makes the rock weaker.  It is greatest in climates with high temperature, lots of rainfall, and high pollution levels. o Rust is an ex. (water and oxygen trigger a chemical reaction) o Plants decompose and release chemicals into the soil  Chemical reactions can cause areas of rock to be “eaten” away and produce gaps - sometimes grow to be underground caves.

3. Biological Weathering  When either physical or chemical weathering is caused by a plant or animal, it can be called biological weathering.  (ex) Roots of a tree breaking through a rock
