Republic Citizens have the right to vote for their leaders The leaders rule in the name of the people Most powerful part of government was the senate
Patrician Original Aristocratic Families of Ancient Rome 300 upper-class men that made up the senate
Plebeian Ordinary citizens They could not hold office or be senators
Consul Two Men that lead the government Consuls always did what the Senate wanted Consuls only ruled for one year
Veto Rejection of a bill by the leader If only one of the consul said “Veto” (forbid it) the matter was dropped
Dictator Had all the powers of a king, but could only hold office for 6 months
Section 2 Vocabulary Ancient Rome
Province Divided areas of the empire Each province had a Roman Governor supported by an Army.
Aqueduct Structures that carried water over long distances They were huge arches that were many miles long
Section 3 Vocabulary Ancient Rome
Circus Shows that were held in the Colosseum or in arenas Circuses could be violent Any Roman went to the circus no matter if they were rich or poor

Messiah A savior that would bring justice and freedom to the land
Disciple Followers of Jesus They would tell stories about Jesus' life and his teachings The four major disciples were: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
Gospel The four disciples writings were called gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John had each written one story
Epistle Written letters to Christian groups in distant cities Many of these epistles became part of the Bible
Martyr People who choose to die for a cause they believe in Martyrs were looked at as heroes
Section 5 Vocabulary Ancient Rome
Mercenary Foreign soldiers who serve only for pay These soldiers do not fight for cause They switch sides if it is for their personal advantage
Inflation The more money made, the less value it had Inflation cannot be controlled and roman coins soon became worthless
