Headlight: ICT Project Lesson 1: Logos.

Aims:  To introduce the Headlight ICT project.  To understand what makes a good logo.  Be able to design your own company logo using a design software package.

Headlight ICT Project:  Your challenge is that you are going to pitch to the VW Group your idea for a new special edition model/concept vehicle for one of their ranges (this could be for Porsche, Audi, VW, Seat Skoda, Bugatti, Bentley, Ducati, Scania or Lamborghini).  Research who you would sell this vehicle to e.g. your target market, create surveys and produce charts and graphs to show your findings visually.  Create a 3D design for your vehicle using a 3D design package and then either create and edit an advert for it using flip-up cameras or create an app for it.  Finally you will present your whole pitch to the VW group in the way of a high end PowerPoint or Prezi at the end of the project.

Headlight ICT Project:  The Key Skills that will be developed throughout this project are:  Communication.  Decision Making.  Innovation.  Evaluation.  Team Work.  Personal Effectiveness.  Problem Solving.  Independent Learning.

Time to pick your company teams: Click and input class list to generate a random fruit machine name/team picker:

Your company believes in the Team Mentality: Level 3  I can work as part of a team.  I know that we are all responsible for the work. Level 5  I let people know if they are failing the team in a constructive way.  I can negotiate.  I encourage people to take responsibility for their part of the work.  I am open minded about other people’s suggestions. Level 7  I play a lead role in the team.  I motivate team members so they will join in.  I let people know when they are doing well.  I encourage the team to keep going if things seem to be going wrong.

In your groups you have 5 minutes to come up with your company name: It needs to be:  Relevant to the VW Group.  Catchy.  Memorable.

Top 10 Work Skills…which ones do you have? What do you think are The Top 10 skills are that employers are looking for in new employees? 1). In your group assign people their job titles:  You have 5 minutes discuss each person’s skills around the table, and decide which person in the group would be most suited to be:  Chief Executive Officer - responsible for ensuring every team member is on task and meeting deadlines.  Managing Director – responsible to the Group Leader, and is in charge if the Group leader is away.  Head of Design – responsible for all things creative.  Technical Support – responsible for any ICT problems the team members have.  Head of Communications – responsible for making sure information is communicated and presented well.  Optional: Present to the class a short speech on who is in your team, what team skills you collectively have, who will lead your group and why?

What is a Logo?  A logo is a specific symbol chosen to represent a company.  It can be a drawing, illustration, symbol, abbreviation, lettering style, or word.  Today we are going to set you a task to use and explore a 3D design package e.g. Google Sketch up to create a logo.  Later in the project I will give you more help on how to use the software and in greater detail to design your car, but for now I want you to do more independent learning and exploration to design your Team’s Logo after watching a quick video clip.

In a moment we will design your company’s Logo…but first guess the logos:

Logos of the VW Group & The IMI:

Logos have 5 important design elements: 1.Describable. 2.Memorable. 3.Effective without colour. 4.Scalable i.e. work when just 2cm in size. 5.Relevant to the industry in question.

Different Types of Logos:  Wordmark logo – mainly uses text and typeface to create its message, though other elements might be included e.g. Google.  Lettermark logo – similar to a wordmark but consists of initials or abbreviations e.g. like the one used by BBC.  Brandmark logo – a graphic symbol usually simple but powerful, that comes to represent the company in an abstract way e.g. Nike, Apple.  A combination mark logo – (also called an iconic logotype) combines a wordmark with a brandmark, communicating both a company’s identity and its purpose e.g. Audi.

Design your own Logo..make sure its:  Individually, quickly roughly sketch up using a pencil and paper a design for your logo for your company.  State what type of logo it is.  Explain why you have designed your logo in this way.  You have 3 minutes : select a soundtrackhttp://

Design your company Logo:  As a company look at everyone’s designs and choose which one you like best or incorporate bits of some of them and create your company’s logo.  State what type of logo it is.  Explain why you have designed your logo in this way.

Success Criteria…Is your company’s logo: DescribableScalableRelevantMemorable A Good Logo Effective without colour

Now use a software package to create your logo:  Take your rough hand drawn sketch and create your company’s logo using:  Google Sketch-up, Paint or another package.  Extension exercise come up with a strap line under it... Video clips on how to create a Logo: short clip long clip

Is your company’s logo: DescribableScalableRelevantMemorable A Good Logo Effective without colour

Make improvements: GGB Now work in your company’s to improve your logos using your assessment sheets please: What is G ood? What is G reat? What could be B etter?

Pick your winning logo from your company’s employees who have all had a go at creating it on a 3D design package…

Aims:  To introduce the Headlight ICT project.  To understand what makes a good logo.  Be able to design your own company logo using a design software package.
