CTE and Business Partnerships…The Best of Both For Kids Insurance and Risk Management

What do you mean insurance isn’t a sexy career?  Approximately 50,000 work in Michigan’s insurance industry.  Average wage is $64,000, compared to statewide average of $46,217  There is a job for every interest: marketing, sales, claims, math, computers, etc.

Why does the Michigan insurance industry want to attract young people to our industry?  Almost half of our jobs are held by people 50 and older.  In the next 10 years, we will need to replace those workers in addition to hiring more workers.  Let’s face it, young people don’t grow up wanting to work at an insurance company.

Fact:  60 percent of students who go to college don’t finish in six years.  Students who take college classes in high school are more likely to succeed in college.  Young people are more successful if they are engaged in learning.

Program History  Developed  Partnership With:  Olivet College – Instruction and Curriculum  Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan– Facilities, Placement For Students  First Year of Operation  12 Students Enrolled  10 Completed  Current Year of Operation  20 Students Enrolled

Curriculum  Students that complete this program with a 2.0 have the ability to receive 9 Olivet college credits. The courses the student can receive the credits in are:  IRM 221 – Principles of Insurance & Risk Management, 3 Olivet College Credits  AINS 21 Exam  IRM 322 – Personal Insurance, 3 Olivet College Credits  AINS 22 Exam  IRM 323 – Commercial Insurance, 3 Olivet College Credits  AINS 23 Exam

Unique Delivery Model  First 12 Weeks  Classroom instruction/activities 5 days per week  Use of a Smart Board as instructional tool  Second 12 Weeks  Classroom instruction/activities 3 days per week  On-line Virtual Classroom 2 days per week utilizing Adobe Connect  Third 12 Weeks  Flipped classroom instruction/activities 3 days per week  Job shadow 2 days per week

Additional Learning Activities  Mock Interviews at Olivet College  Participation in Business Professionals of America  Six students competed at Regional's and three are moving on to the State Leadership Conference  Exposure to Industry  Accident Fund provides a day long job shadow experience including an hour long meeting with their top executives.  Guest Speakers  Participation in Career Prep Center Activities  Present Program Opportunity at High School Visitation  Present Careers in Insurance at 8 th Grade Career Exploration  Present Program at Business Partner Appreciation Breakfast  National Technical Honor Society

Success Stories  Many students are continuing their education at Olivet College studying Insurance and Risk Management  Students are being employed by Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan  Many students received summer employment from Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan  Students have received scholarships totaling over $125,000  Application approval by Michigan Department of Education Office of Career and Technical Education was granted in 2013  Approval will allow duplication of this program in other areas of the State of Michigan  CIP Code  GAP is in Navigator
