Do you have what it takes to survive in the wilderness? PBL on Hatchet Do you have what it takes to survive in the wilderness?

Unit Summary The students will read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and will journal digitally throughout the unit. The students will make connections to what it takes to survive in the Canadian wilderness to what it takes to survive in the Piedmont of NC.

Curriculum Framing Questions ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: What does it take to survive in the wilderness? UNIT QUESTIONS: How does conflict produce change? How can wildlife and humans live together successfully? How can the geography of an area help me better understand my surroundings? CONTENT QUESTIONS: What is the conflict in the story? Which animals in the Canadian wilderness are dangerous? What plants are edible in the Canadian wilderness? Which plants and animals in the Piedmont region of North Carolina can sustain life?

The following will help my students develop 21st century skills by: Exercising sound reasoning in understanding Making complex choices and decisions Articulating thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively through speaking and writing

Gauging Student Needs Assessment I can use the information from these assessments to : focus on parts of the novel that students have misunderstandings about Students can use the information from these assessments to: set goals for how they will adjust the pace of their reading to complete the tasks

Goals for my students Students will digitally journal a survival guide as if they were having to survive in the Canadian wilderness Students will create a newspaper highlighting the main events of the novel while integrating some creativity
