Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

GARY PAULSEN Author of HATCHET, BRIAN’S WINTER, BRIAN’S RETURN, and THE RIVER These stories recount the adventures of 13 year old Brian Robeson who is stranded in the Canadian Wilderness.

Brian’s Saga

GUTS The true stories which inspired Gary to write the Brian books. Includes a chapter on “Eating Eyeballs and Guts or Starving”

Rags to Riches: Gary’s Story of Survival Gary Paulsen grew up with alcoholic parents. He spent much of his childhood with relatives. As a boy, Gary would hunt rabbits and other small game in and out of season. Because of Gary’s bad home life, the game warden would look the other way.

Gary went to the public library to escape his problems. A librarian helped him discover a new life through books. Gary was hooked on books and reading. His life was transformed through books.

Gary was inspired to write some of his stories after running the 1,180-mile Alaskan Iditarod twice. Of Gary’s 175 books, three were awarded the Newbery Honor Award: HATCHET, DOGSONG, and THE WINTER ROOM.
