Presentation transcript:

This year, there are approximately 50 students enrolled in CHE 504. Because of this, we have the ability to use our creative talents and produce a very large, periodic table poster in the hall outside this classroom. Here is how the project works. 1- Each student will randomly pick 2 elements from a hat. 2- The student will make a poster for each element. The poster must fit onto a standard 6.5” by 11”sheet of paper. The powerpoint page is already sized for this. Use the template. You can download the file from the course webpage. The poster must include the following. The atomic symbol, atomic number and atomic mass, the boiling point, melting point, electronegativity, atomic radius and ionization energy. Include 3-5 facts that readers would find interesting about this element. One must be the date the element was first discovered. Include at least -3 examples of where this element is used, either alone or as a compound. Find or create appropriate pictures that relate to the properties and uses of your element. Have fun with it. Hand in the two element posters, powerpoint file, electronically by sending an to with your name and elements in the Ex. John Dalton – Lithium and Tungsten /10 marks

It is commonly in the diatomic gas form, H 2 or plasma state. Hydrogen is vary combustible (reacts easily with oxygen) and has the 2 nd lowest boiling point of the elements, 19 o C above absolute zero. Hydrogen was first isolated and collected in 1671 by Boyle. Uses Hydrogen is principally used as a fuel, in our sun, hydrogen fuel cells, petroleum and explosives. It is also found in fats, gasoline, all organic compounds, water (H 2 O) and ammonia based fertilizers (NH 3 ).

Properties Melting Point 1527 o C Boiling Point unknown Preferred Charge 3+, 2+ Electronegativity 1.3 Atomic Radius unknown Ionization E 627 KJ/mol Facts Fermium is he heaviest element that can be formed by neutron bombardment of lighter elements. A completely pure sample of fermium has never been created. It has a half-life of days. Fermium was discovered as a product of the first hydrogen bomb explosion by Enrico Fermi in 1952 Uses Due to the fact that only minute (nanogram) quantities of Fermium exist, there are no known applications of this element apart from basic theoretical research. It is primarily found in the aqueous ion phase. Fermium Yttrium Alloy, used to determine the enthalpy of vaporization of Fermium metal. Enrico Fermi: Father of the atomic bomb, discoverer of the neutrino and Nobel prize winner in 1938.
