HIS PRISON LIFE Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 and in the village of Mvez in Umtatu. On 5 August 1962, police captured Mandela near howick.He was Jailed in Johannesburg's Marshall Square prison, he was charged with inciting workers' strikes and leaving the country without permission. While he was on trail people were demonstrating outside the court. On the 12 th June 1964 Nelson Mandela and two of his co- accused was found guilty on all four charges, sentencing them to life imprisonment. Mandela and his co-accused were transferred from Pretoria to the prison on Robben Island. He remaining there for the next 18 years. Mandela was imprisoned in a damp concrete cell measuring 8 feet (2.4 m) by 7 feet (2.1 m), with a straw mat on which to sleep. In April 1982 Mandela was transferred to pollsmoor prison until 1988

GENERAL ELECTION 1994 Mandela could appear; though a poor public speaker, he was a popular figure with great status among black South Africans. The ANC campaigned on a Reconstruction and Development Programme to build a million houses in five years. introduce universal free education and extend access to water and electricity. IN CONCLUSION He was Jailed for 27 years, he emerged in 1990 to become the country's first black president four years later and to play a leading role in the drive for peace in other spheres of conflict. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in In 2004, at the age of 85, Mr Mandela retired from public life to spend more time with his family and friends and engage in "quiet reflection". In early 2012 he was treated for what the president's office said was "a long-standing abdominal complaint". But in recent months he has been troubled repeatedly by a lung infection
