Is the Internet a Safe Place to Surf? Students: form 5a Teacher: Stepanenko L.Yu. School #38 Sevastopol 2011

We wanted to know: Why do our classmates use the Internet? Do they think the Internet is a safe place where one can do anything he wants? What types of users do our classmates belong to? Have they ever come across any unpleasant or irritable information online? Have they ever faced any Internet threats? Do they know any safety Internet rules?

Why do we use the Internet ?

Internet Users of 5 a form Gamers Learners Socializers Consumers

Gamers use the Internet to play games are skillful and technically minded, know the Internet and computers very well to win is very important for them like to communicate with other players on special forums sometimes undertake the roles of their game characters

Risks sometimes gamers forget the real situation and become dependent on virtual life often become sleepless, irritable, inattentive or even aggressive can’t understand real human emotions their eyesight gets worse some games may be very expensive

Socializers think the Internet is a place to communicate and find friends they use different social networks, ICQ, Skype, etc. to express themselves it is easier to show your personality in the Net than in real life

Risks fail to interact with people in real life share their personal information with strangers face problems when meet tricksters and criminals

Consumers think the Internet is a big shop where they can get & download different free programmes, photos, pictures, films, music or do shopping are well-informed, more experienced in setting up and achieving goals can compare, analyze and choose less Internet dependant

Risks instead of a free file Consumers can get spam, wrong or false information sometimes they have to pay for downloading and give their personal data

Learners For learners the Internet is a source of Information. They surf the Net to find information for school, to make reports, prepare for tests, do online quizzes and take part in distance courses or olympiads. Learners are not so dependable on the Net. They seldom share their personal information.

Risks Sometimes learners come across unreliable or doubtful information. The sites they enter may have negative content.
