The CFA Institute research challenge Craig Ayers, CFA, Bill King, CFA Dave Bolt, CFASF Education Director September 22, 2014 [Presenter’s Note: Welcome to the Professor’s Presentation, which you can use to introduce your students to the CFA Program and to CFA Institute. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at university@cfainstitute.org.] Hello, I’m _______. Thank you for having me here. It’s my hope that after today you’ll have a better understanding of the CFA charter and what an important role it can play in your future.

2013 research challenge As part of the local level of the CFA Institute Research Challenge, you are automatically part of a global network of nearly 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students. One of the great aspects of this program is its global reach. The investment industry may seem large due to its globality, however it really isn’t. You are on the right path to integrating with the future leaders of the industry.

The Investment research challenge WHAT IS IT? FIRST SHOW, THEN TELL… A new student experience video featuring the three Global Finalist teams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6POIAHu8flo&index=1&list=UUHwkW7lTTzf 19xg5R4gfwVw RESEARCH CHALLENGE PROMO VIDEO CFA CHALLENGE CHANNEL The CFA charter is a globally recognized graduate-level credential that bridges academic theory, current industry practice, and ethical and professional standards to give you a strong foundation of advanced investment analysis and real-world portfolio management skills. It is held by more than 100,000 investment professionals working in more than 130 countries, and is increasingly recognized as comparable to a variety of degrees, credentials, and licenses around the world. For example, the United Kingdom National Academic Recognition Information Centre benchmarked the CFA Program as comparable to a master’s degree. Additionally, today more than 180 universities around the world incorporate the CFA curriculum into their degree programs.

What is the cfa institute research challenge? How is it organized? Worldwide intercollegiate competition between teams of students Organized by local CFA Institute volunteers – usually through CFA member societies At least 4 teams of 3-5 students participate A local-level Research Challenge is a local, intercollegiate competition sponsored by CFA Institute volunteers – usually through one of CFA Institute’s 130+ member societies. Local competitions invite at least four different universities, each sponsoring a team of 3 to 5 students, to participate. This competition is unique because it promotes best practices, research skills, analysis, report writing, and presentation skills in action. What also makes it unique is what it is NOT. The competition is not based on the performance of a particular stock or portfolio and therefore doesn’t promote short-termism. It does promote how to conduct research ethically, how to analyze the relevant data and develop a recommendation and how to present and defend that recommendation in a professional manner.

The Investment research challenge WHAT DO YOU LEARN? Working with Investor Relations. Conducting Company Specific Research. Building and defending an investment hypothesis. Producing a comprehensive written report. Summarizing your findings in a 10 minute presentation. Presenting to a panel of portfolio managers in a board room setting. The experience of being an equity analyst. The CFA charter is a globally recognized graduate-level credential that bridges academic theory, current industry practice, and ethical and professional standards to give you a strong foundation of advanced investment analysis and real-world portfolio management skills. It is held by more than 100,000 investment professionals working in more than 130 countries, and is increasingly recognized as comparable to a variety of degrees, credentials, and licenses around the world.
