First Annual Sherman Hill Model Railroad Show Cheyenne, WY May 21-23, 2010 The Reasons to Go! Chance to operate ¼-size Live Steam!

This was the first annual model railroad show the Sherman Hill Model Railroad Club sponsored in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It was a test to see if they would have enough attendance and participation to have annual train shows. I always enjoy going to Cheyenne to rail-fan and to visit the UP Steam shops. When Kent Charles was contacted by Mark Willoughby of the Sherman Hill Model RR Club to see if Kent would bring NTRAK modules, we immediately decided to go! When I mentioned this to John Rimmasch of Wasatch RR Contractors he said he would be there. If we wanted to run a steam loco, he was teaching a class prior to the show on Saturday. Then Annette (my wife) and Julie (our daughter who lives in Parachute, CO) decided to go! The Show honored Lynn T. Nystrom of Cheyenne who passed away passed away May 5, Lynn was a member of the UP Steam Crew and had fired for Julie’s cab ride from Cheyenne to Denver in He was a member of the Sherman Hill Model RR Club as well. May 21 Denver to Cheyenne: 6:45am met at Kent’s house, rode in Kent’s truck hauling NTRAK modules. Arrived Warren Air Force Base about 9:00am. We had hoped to tour the base museum at Warren but could not get in without an active duty or retired veteran so we headed over to the Taco John Center to set up the NTRAK modules. Kent and I helped get the Sherman Hill NTRAK modules from the roundhouse so we took advantage and shot a few prototype shots at the roundhouse. The Cagney loco still has its coal grates but is now fired from propane. It runs at about 80 to 120psi and weighs about 2000 lbs. Yes, it is almost 100 years old and runs like a champ! The track is 15” gauge, 8 lb. mine rail. Wasatch RR Contractors ( will be building these locomotives in coal/propane and diesel fuel versions. Better sign up now! The Cagney is a great loco to learn on. It has a throttle and a reverse lever with push forward for forward, center neutral and pull back for reverse. No brakes. To stop, you either coast or reverse direction. Cheyenne, WY May 22, :30am to 5pm Train Show As Julie left the Train Show, she shot these photos of the Union Pacific Railroad’s Miniature Train in operation at the Show Entrance. The Miniature Train is used at special events and was built in 1956 using a tow tractor and luggage carts similar to those used at big passenger stations.

The round trip was 260 miles on Kent’s truck. The Super 8 Hotel rate was $77.00/double/night & is located near I-25 & US-30 in Cheyenne. Cheyenne, WY, May 21-23, 2010 Final Notes: First Annual Sherman Hill Model Railroad Show and to Wasatch RR Contractors Our sincere thanks to all the sponsors of the First Annual Sherman Hill Model Railroad Show and to Wasatch RR Contractors for a WONDERFUL Time! Annette and Julie drove up separately on Friday arriving about 9pm. They stayed at the same Super 8 for $66 per night. After the roundhouse tour and pizza, they drove home to our place. Julie went to church with Annette on Sunday and then returned to her home in Parachute, CO after noon. The Train Show had at least five major layouts and over 20 vendors. I did not hear an attendance count but Saturday’s attendance was good. I purchased a UP engineer’s seat from Randy Lee of Highlands Station for $150. John Rimmasch will build a pedestal on rollers for it. I plan to use it as my Dispatcher’s or Chief Operating Officer chair.
