& GUIDED QUESTIONS MATH VOCABULARY DAY 1

Everyday you will be given some Math words to define. You will use your MATH JOURNAL to define them. Copy down the words then write down the definition to each word.

Let’s begin with THE TABLE OF CONTENTS.

DATE TABLE OF CONTENTSPAGE 8/24/2011 MATH VOCABULARY 1 8/24/2011 GUIDED QUESTION 2

COUNT FIVE PAGES PAST THE TABLE OF CONTENTS

At the top LEFT SIDE write the date 8/24/2011

8/24/2011

At the top RIGHT SIDE write the page number 1

8/24/2011 1

On the top blue line write MATH VOCABULARY

8/24/ MATH VOCABULARY

Copy down the vocabulary words and the definitions that follow.

8/24/ MATH VOCABULARY place value – the value determined by the position of a digit in a number. decimal – part of a whole number. even – an even number can be divided into two equal groups. You only have to check the last digit to tell if a number is even. 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 are all even numbers.

We are not done with the vocabulary yet.

Turn to the INDEX portion of your MATH JOURNAL.

Place value starts with “P”. So find “P” in your INDEX.

P

Write the word place value on the “P” page.

place value P

We wrote the definition for place value on page 1, so on the far right write 1

place value1 P

The next word is decimal. It starts with a “D”. So find “D” in your INDEX.

D

Write the word decimal on the “D” page.

decimal D

Some days you will be given a Math question. You will use your MATH JOURNAL to answer it. Copy down the Math question then answer it in 3 to 4 complete sentences.

We will answer the first question together.

Turn to the next blank page in your MATH JOURNAL. Right after the MATH VOCABULARY.

At the top LEFT SIDE write the date 8/24/2011

8/24/2011

At the top RIGHT SIDE write the page number 2

8/24/2011 2

On the top blue line write Guided Question

8/24/ Guided Question

8/24/ Why is place value important? Guided Question

Answer the question to the best of your abilities. After a few minutes we will go over it together?

8/24/ Why is place value important? To know the value of the number. If you are in the library, being able to order and compare numbers helps you locate the book you want. If you are looking for an address, being able to order and compare numbers helps you not get lost If you want to buy a video game, being able to order and compare numbers helps you figure out if you have enough money. Guided Question

I understand this is a lot to take in but I have faith you will get the hang of it. I expect everyone to be able to do this all on their own by the end of September.

This is a very important activity. Your MATH JOURNAL is a very important tool. You will use your MATH JOURNAL to help you better understand MATH. DO NOT MISPLACE IT.
