Classroom Activity The students are currently studying Shakespeare in literature. The teacher saw that most of the students were having trouble understanding Shakespeare’s writing. She asked the students to come up with a creative way to help them understand. They decided to attend a performance of Romeo and Juliet at The Atlanta Shakespeare Tavern as a field trip to help them grasp a full understanding of Shakespeare’s work.

Role Of The Teacher The role of the teacher in progressivism is to direct and incorporate learning activities so that students can find a purpose.

Role Of The Student Progressivism is a student-centered philosophy that promotes students to learn by doing. Students in progressivism strive to become brilliant problem solvers and socially aware of the world around them.

Pros Pros: Students pick what they want to learn about; topic is something they are interested in. They are active in their own learning. Promotes critical thinking. Students have to think for themselves instead of just looking the answer.

Cons Cons: Students are not given routine or structure in their environment. Students are not learning the information that needs to be learned. Test scores lower.
