Screens and Photographs By: Ann-Kristin Jacob 7A

The Task I chose Task A: Research the different standard dimensions of photographs. What are they, and do they all show the same image?

Introduction You see pictures everyday, it is possible that you might never have gone one day without seeing an image. Think about it, you see pictures in a book, on computers, on phones, in shopping malls, everywhere. But have you ever wondered if a picture shows the same image even though you change the dimensions of it?

What are the different dimensions? The dimensions are: 10 x 15 cm (equivalent 4 x 6 inches) 13 x 18 cm (equivalent 5 x 7 inches) 15 x 20 cm (equivalent 6 x 8 inches) 20 x 30 cm (equivalent 8 x 12 inches)

Photographs with different ratios Photographs that have different ratios wouldn’t show the same image, because they only show the same image if the ratio is the same. In this photo you can see that the dimension is different. You can also see that on the smaller picture, on the bottom a bit of the chin is cut of and also on the sides are parts cut off. In this photo you can see that the dimension is different. You can also see that in the bigger picture some of the hair on the top is missing. That shows that they changed the ratio of the picture and the dimensions.

Using Algebra A D C B

Conclusion When you change the dimension of a picture, the image wont stay the same. It wont stay the same because, if it stays the same the ratio also has to stay the same. But the ratio wont stay the same when you change the dimensions. As you could see with the two pictures I showed before there was always a bit cut of from the picture. In one of them a bit of the girls chin was cut of and on the other one the hair from the girl was cut of.
