Geography Objectives/SWBAT: I will know how to locate places on a map, by being able to differentiate between geographical locations on earth. I will use longitude and latitude lines to locate continents and bodies of water on a map. Unit 1

Vocabulary to look out for Word Definition Sentence Picture Continent Prime Meridian Equator Longitude Latitude Coordinates Hemisphere

My Geography Rings Ring 1: City Ring 2: State/ Providence Write the word city The name of your local city Ring 2: State/ Providence Write the word State The name of your local state City State

Ring 3: Country -Write the word Country -The name of your local Country   Ring 4: Continent -Write the word Continent -The name of your local Continent -The name of 6 other continents Country Continent

Continent= Water 7 Continents 6 Bodies of water http://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/geog raphy/continentsoftheworld/ 6 Bodies of water 5 Oceans, 1 Sea Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, Artic Ocean Mediterranean Sea Oceans, Seas, Lakes and Rivers are all bodies of water, there are 6 that we need to know for sure. Throughout history people have settled near them. People need water to survive, but they also need water to farm. For that reason many civilizations we will study began because of water. However, bodies of water can be important in many other ways; such as transportation and trade, but if the water is too large to travel on they can act like barriers or blockades, and for a very long time the Atlantic ocean was used more as a barrier than for travel. It kept Europe from N & S America.  Layer 2- Bodies of Water -Cut out map #3 and glue it onto layer 2. -Label the 5 major oceans of the world and the Mediterranean Sea. -Color the Oceans blue and the Seas Green   Pacific Ocean (2 places) -Atlantic Ocean -Indian Ocean -Southern Ocean -Artic Ocean -Mediterranean Sea

Hemisphere… Draw a line over the Equator with a Red color. -Draw a line over the Prime Meridian with an Orange color. -The earth is divided into hemispheres, which means half of a globe. -Equator circles the world from East to West, and divides the earth into Northern and Southern hemispheres. -Prime Meridian circles the earth from North to South and divides the earth into Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

What to look for on a Map… Latitude Longitude Coordinates North, East, South, West “Never Eat Shredded Wheat” Brain Pop: http://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/geog raphy/latitudeandlongitude/ -Geographers use Longitude and Latitude to find exact locations of objects or places on the surface of Earth. Both are measured in degrees and minutes. (we measure in time, thanks to ancient greek geographer, Ptolemy who designed a grid like system of known places to help those at sea navigate better) Layer 3- Lines on a Map --Label the lines running North to South as Longitude in a Blue color. -Label the lines running East to West as Latitude in a Green color. Create a Legend Box and label the following

Let’s find some continents… First Try/modeling: 40 degrees N, 20 degrees E is found on what continent? Choose volunteer: What continent is found below 20degrees S and in between 40degrees and 80 degrees W?

You Try…Groups of 3 On a note card, in groups of three, find the three coordinate locations. Along with answering the final question. The first group to find the three locations earns prize from goody bag. Name the locations listed from the coordinates given: 1. 40S, 60W 2. 20N, 20E 3. 60S, 120E (name continent and ocean) Everyone’s name should be on one note card. Each person should answer one question, everyone answers the last question to come up with one answer. Example of collaboration.

Individual Practice…page8 Try these out on your own, name the locations of these coordinates: 45°S, 150°E 90°N, 60°E 30°S, 60°W 40°N, 35°E 30°S, 120°W

Parts of a Map… Title Key/Legend Scale Compass Rose Cities () Capitals (✪) Boundary Lines What does the title tell us about the map? What type of map are we looking at. What does the Key/Legend tell us about a map? A reference section to see what is labeled what. What does the scale tell us? Distance on a map in relation to on earth/ Why is there always a compass on a map? To tell you where the directions are positioned. Why do cities have a solid dot and capitals have a star? To show difference in size based off of its geographical location. Boundary lines tell us what? territory
