SELF OR ENVIRONMENT? LOCUS OF CONTROL:

INTERNAL LOCUS OF CONTROL Outcomes are within your control, are determined by your hard work, attributes, or decisions. Behaviours: Display great work motivation Strong expectations that effort leads to performance Exhibit high performance on tasks involving learning or problem solving, when performance leads to valued rewards Have high job satisfaction Obtain higher salaries and greater salary increases than externals

EXTERNAL LOCUS OF CONTROL Outcomes are outside your control, are determined by “fate” or “luck” and are independent of your hard work or decisions. Behaviours: More anxious than internals

MANAGERIAL IMPLICATIONS Job Assignments: Management may want to place internals in jobs requiring high initiative and low compliance since they may resist a manager’s attempt to closely supervise their work. Management may want to place externals in highly structured jobs requiring greater compliance. Reward Systems: Internals would likely prefer and respond more productively to incentives such as merit pay or sales commissions.

WHAT IS YOUR LOCUS OF CONTROL? On the back of the hand-out, circle one letter for each pair of items, in accordance with your beliefs.
