PowerPoint Differentiated Unit 4 Week 1 Group C Mr. Smet’s Scientific Studies

 This Power Point presentation has been made to walk you through the worksheet. It will answer a short number of the questions from your packet but also go through the key points of answering the other questions with examples.  Work with urgency! How this works

Section 1 Pre-Presentation

Section 1 Pre-Presentation  Before beginning the PowerPoint, answer the question for #1

Question #1 Possible Answers (there are more than these)  The parasite might steal blood from the host.  The parasite might steal food from the host.  The parasite might multiply (reproduce) within the host.  The parasite might mind-control the host.

Section 2 Background Information

Section 2 Background Information #1  One of the major parasitic relationships that other species have with us is through the disease called Malaria.  Malaria is very common in Africa and causes humans to have fevers, chills, flu-like symptoms and weakening of the immune system (causes humans to get sick easier.)

Section 2 Background Information #2  In Malaria, a parasite called Plasmodium falciparum infects humans and enters their bloodstream through mosquitos.  While inside the body, the parasite multiplies in the liver and is picked up by later mosquito bites to infect even more humans later on.

Section 3 Learning through Games

Section 3 Learning through Game #1  During this section, you will be playing the roles of both mosquito and parasite to learn about how the parasitic relationship between Plasmodium falciparum happens.  You will be clicking on a link in the next slide that will take you to two games. You will use the information from these games to answer the questions.

Section 3 Learning through Game #2 educational/medicin e/malaria/

Section 4 Malaria Life Cycle Tur

Section 4 Malaria Life Cycle Tour #1  During this section, you will be following through a tour of the life cycle of a malaria parasite.  Answer questions 1-9 using the information from this link.
