Matthew 6:9-13 9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen

Introduction Matthew 6:13 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ This section of the Lord’s Prayer has to do with temptation & the evil one.

1. Not Into Temptation: Matthew 6:13 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’

1.1 Temptation and Testing ‘Tempt’ comes from the Greek (‘peirazein’) which could also mean ‘testing’. Purpose of ‘tempt’ is to ‘sin’ and the purpose of ‘test’ is ‘righteousness’ (Read James 1:3, 12).

1.2 God Tests, Not Tempt James 1:13 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;   God does not tempt but allows us to be “tested” so we will know ourselves.

Genesis 22:1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.

Job 1:12 12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”

John 6:5-6 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,  “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

1.3 The Devil Tempts Matthew 4:3 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,  tell these stones to become bread.”   The devil “tempts” us to try to get us to sin against God and His word.

2 Corinthians 2:11 11 in order that Satan  might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. Ephesians 6:12  12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

1.4 Enticed by Our Sinful Nature James 1:14 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own  evil desire and enticed

1 Corinthians 10:12 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! Beware of spiritual pride and ignorance as we need to depend upon God.

1.5 Prayer for Help Matthew 26:41 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.  The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Luke 22:31-32 31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked  to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

Psalm 19:13 13 Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression.

1 Corinthians 10:13 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. Temptation is common God is faithful He controls our tests He will provide a way out

2. Deliver Us: Matthew 6:13 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

2.1 The Devil is The Evil One 1 John 5:19 19 …the whole world is under the control of the evil one.

Galatians 1:4 4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,

2.2 The Evil One Blinds & Snatches Matthew 13:19 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom  and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart…

2 Corinthians 4:4 4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ….

2.3 Resist the Evil One James 4:7 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil,  and he will flee from you.

John 17:15 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.
