Introduction You are a historian who has been given an assignment by your boss. You are to explore the rainforest anywhere in the world with two colleagues! You have never been in a rainforest and know nothing about what is inside a rainforest.

Task 1) Your job is to explore the rainforest and learn all about it! The following questions will help guide your exploration: What is the rainforest? Where are rainforests found in the world? What does it look like? What kinds of species live in the rainforest? What do they look like and how do they survive?

Task 2) Once you have gathered enough information about the rainforest you chose, you will investigate one, mysterious animal: Describe what the animal looks and what species it is What part of the rainforest it lives in What does it eat How is its behavior Is it a solitary animals or social

Task 3) After you have “explored” all these answers you are to report your findings back to your boss (your class). You will create a poster that will include: Hand-made illustrations of the rainforest along with ten facts about the rainforest (this can also be on a separate sheet of paper typed). Your mysterious animal along with five facts about it

Process I will team you with two other classmates in your class to create a team of three people. You will work together in exploring the rainforest, investigating one animal, and creating a poster of all your findings!

Rubric You will be graded on the following components: Criteria 4 20 points 3 18-19 points 2 16-17 points 1 15 or less points Does your poster clearly illustrate the rainforest and all its parts? Are areas labeled if needed? Is your animal drawn and depicted in its natural habitat, in other words does your drawing show your research of the animal? Does it include at least five facts? How is your craftsmanship? Is your drawing neat and clear? Are color appropriate and thought out? Is writing legible and neat?

Where are the rainforest located? Rainforest grow on 4 continents: South America Africa Asia Australia Near the Earth’s Equator, where sunlight and rainfall concentrate WARM, STEAMY, AND DENSE!In rainforests near the equator, the daily temperature is 75 degrees F to 85 degrees F year-round. Most receive 80 inches of rain every year, although some may receive as much as 320 inches in a year. Average humidity in tropical forests is high, from 70 to 90 percent. Warm temperatures and humidity combine to make a comfortable habitat for many evergreen plants, so tropical forests are lush and beautiful.

Inside the Rainforest Rainforest Layers: Forest Floor Shrub Layer Under Storey Canopy Emergent Layer The Emergent Layer is the tallest layer. The tallest tree stands at 200 ft. above the Forest Floor. The kinds of animals that live in this layer are Eagles, Monkeys, Bats and Butterflies. The Canopy Layer is all Branches and Leaves. It is like the roof for the other two layers below it. Lots of animals live in this area because the food is easy to find. These animals include: Snakes, Toucans and Tree Frogs. The Understory Layer doesn't get much sunshine in this area because the plants have to grow larger leaves for it to reach the sunlight. Most plants in this area grow up to 12 ft. In this layer some of the animals are: Jaguars, red-eye tree frogs and leopards. There are also lots of insects which live in this layer as well. The Shrub layer is in the middle of the Understory layer and the forest floor. This layer consists of shrubs and ferns. The Forest Floor Layer is very dark on the Forest Floor. Mostly, no plants live in this area. There are no plants in this area because hardly any sunlight reaches the ground. On leaf might take 1 year to decompose but in a regular climate that receives sunlight it takes 6 weeks. Giant anteaters live in this layer.
