 Mexico is home to many styles of music:  Mariachi – from Jalisco  Son Jarocho –from Veracruz  Son istmeno – from Oxaca and Chiapas Son istmeno  Banda  Does music in the U.S, vary by region? How?

 Mariachi music is characterized by: Mariachi  Instruments like the vihuela and guitarron  The unique trajes de charro  The Mariachi’s “cry”  Let’s listen to the Mariachi son “El Cascabel” and complete the Music Review Journal.

 Son Jarocho is a song style from Veracruz Son  The music is characterized by the jarana (8 string guitar), the requinto (4 string guitar), and the arpa (a 32 string harp)  Listen to “La Bamba” by Tlen Huicani and complete the column for Music Selection A  Next, Listen to the Ritchie Valens version and complete column for Music Selection B.

 Banda music is influenced by German culture (polka “oom-pahs”)  Most Banda songs are “corridos” which describe life on the border  If Banda music has accordion it is called norteño. Why?

 Reggae – Jamaica Reggae  Compas – Haiti  Merengue – Dominican Republic Merengue  Calypso – Trinidad and Tobago Calypso

 The most famous reggae musician is Bob Marley  Reggae comes from a mixture of Mento (Jamaican folk music), Ska, and Rocksteady  Reggae music is characterized by guitar chords on beats 2 and 4 in 4/4 time.

 Moderate tempo and pretty melodies  The steel drum is the trademark sound of calypso  Created after World War II out of empty oil drums  Soca was created by Garfield Blackman to bring back the popularity of Calypso. Soca has a heavy beat and funky bass line.  Indian instruments – the sitar and tabla – were added in the 1970’s to create soca Chutney

 We will hear two styles from Trinidad and Tobago  Calypso is know for the steel drum  Soca features a heavy bass drum beat and funky bass rhythm  Let’s compare and contrast “Ju Ju Warrior” (8) and “Miss Tourist” (9) fill out the front side and complete a venn diagram on the back.
