Status and Highlights of the DC Field User Program as of summer 2010, mid-point in current award period FlexTime has provided 30% more magnet time while holding overall energy usage constant via energy budget for user. Improved grounding, shielding, instrumentation has improved user signal to noise. Ground floor in mK lowered with shielding, less RF interference. Now NMR experiments have the same resolution as in other areas at the NHMFL. Advanced cryogenics has increased user effectiveness. Users spend less time waiting for temperature to stabilize and have less lost time with cryogenic problems. Power supplies upgraded to 14 MW. Interphase and filter inductors still being optimized. Improved reliability, noise and performance.

Vision for the DC Field User Program as of summer 2010, mid-point in current award period All “workhorse” resistive magnets upgraded to 28 MW {1.6M$ea, 6.4M$ total} T (32 mm bore) 36-38T (50 mm bore) Series Connected Hybrid (14 MW) – 36T high homogeneity insert, 40T high field insert {11.7 M$} Superconducting magnet operational at 32T with 10 mK dilution refrigerator, other SC magnets being made or purchased. {5 M$ ?} Hybrid magnet outsert being upgraded to 15 T giving 48 T total field {2 M$ ?} Proposal for 60 T hybrid being developed {100 M$} New “standard” instrumentation heat capacity, dilatometry, scanning probe microscopy {1 person / technique} Standard instrumentation on “PPMS like” pucks allowing remote operation and measurements, these could be run in a 3 rd shift. {1 technician + 1 control room operator}
