Van Hise Elementary School Improvement Plan (SIP) UPDATE October 29, 2013

MMSD Vision Every school will be a thriving school that prepares every student to graduate from high school college, career, and community ready.

Yowza! It’s been a busy time of learning around here in the past 3 months!

A District “RESET” August Day Leadership Institute – Aligning our SIP with our new MMSD Framework SMART Goals in both Math & Reading; Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound MAP assessment as the metric for tracking improvement Specific Standards in Reading identified Specific Strategies and Steps Full Day Leadership Team Meeting Understanding goals and action steps based upon the new Framework & continuation of drafting the SIP

Gathering Feedback & Input September, 2013  September 10 th – General Meeting Sharing the Draft SIP  September 16 th & October 16 th – Leadership Team  Multiple Meetings with MMSD Leaders, VHE Staff, Families, Research & Evaluation, NWEA  October 2 nd, 10 th, 17 th – “Coffee Talks”  October 29 th – General Meeting Sharing Revised School Improvement Plan

What Did We Learn Along the Way? We were nudged to look deeper at our data! O Number size matters – small N size= increasing our goal for both proficiency and growth O Advanced Learners’ Growth = requesting data from MMSD and drilling down to the student level to understand growth of kids using MAP

MAP ~ Point in Time… We want to look historically at our data to find trends We acknowledge other measures of growth over time as well Our current 5 th graders first took the assessment as 3 rd graders the first year ( ) & are a “cohort” group

VHE Reading Proficiency Goals Students in grades 3-5: overall proficiency of 63% (1% increase) in reading (MAP) FOCUS GROUPS: - African American students: overall proficiency of 32% (15% increase) in reading - Students with IEPs: overall proficiency of 40% (9% increase)

MAP Growth Target The average growth of students who were in the same grade and began the same term at a similar RIT score. It is nationally normed by NWEA and changes each season.
