Formatting a Word Document Objectives: The Student will: 1. Review the different methods of formatting text 2. Complete the Word document from yesterday

Formatting Text There are multiples way to format text in word: 1. Using the buttons on the Home ribbon 2. Using the drop down menus from the Home ribbon 3. Right mouse click 4. Using the Change Styles drop down menu

Formatting Text – Formatting Toolbar We covered the buttons on the Home ribbon in a previous lesson. Most formatting functions are covered by these buttons!

Font Dialog Box Font: A complete set of characters - alphabet, numbers, standard symbols- with a particular look or style. This dialog box allows for all choices on changing a font

Paragraph Dialog Box This displays the set of options for changing the way a paragraph is displayed.

Bullets and Numbering Choices for Bullet and Number lists

Borders and Shading The complete dialog box for Borders and Shading is opened by first clicking Borders and Shading at the bottom of the drop down menu

Borders and Shading Can set borders for a word, a selected section or set borders for the page.

Borders and Shading Set the shading for the background on a word or words.

Styles and Themes Styles and themes are powerful tools in Word that can help you create professional looking documents easily. A style is a predefined combination of font style, color, and size of text that can be applied to selected text. A theme is a set of formatting choices that can be applied to an entire document and includes theme colors, fonts, and effects.

Styles Styles can greatly improve the appearance and readability of your document. By using styles, you can make sure formatting is applying uniformly throughout your document. Styles are applied from the Home ribbon:

Styles A complete list of styles is shown by clicking the dropdown arrow

Styles You can select a different “style set” but clicking and selecting Style Set: This changes the whole document

Themes The Document Theme defines the colors, fonts and graphic effects for a document. The purpose of a theme is to allow the changing of fonts and colors in a consistent way across a document without having to redefine the individual styles. Themes are found in the Page Layout ribbon:

Themes When you click the main Themes icon, a display appears that shows you all the built-in themes you have available. Live Preview: A new feature in Word 2007 will cause the document's display to change simply by moving your mouse over any of the themes displayed. With Live Preview you don't have to select an item to see how it will change your document. Just move your mouse around the choices and your document temporarily displays the potential changes. When you see the one you like, click to select it. If you don’t like how it looks, Press Ctrl + Z to undo what you just did.

Themes Theme changes are less dramatic than Style changes. There are a number of built in Themes, but more are available on-line

Formatting Text – Right Click Selecting text and right clicking allows you to select many of the same options as the formatting parts of the ribbons.

Formatting a Word Document Summary: There are many different ways to get to the formatting options. Find the one that works for you and use that.

Rest of Today Complete the assignment from Friday. Show the results to me on the screen. Do Mavis Beacon for the remainder of the period.
