Bell Work Describe a chemist in your own words. You must use descriptive words such as (intelligent, mean, friendly, etc.). Also, you must have a least three complete sentences.

Introduction What is your idea of a chemist? Is it someone who works in a laboratory…..perhaps a little eccentric….or perhaps a little mad! Chemists work in labs, law offices, do research, field work, write books/procedures for others to follow, teach, make perfume, products, and the list goes on and on….

Chemists……. Food Chemists Soil Scientists Perfumer Scientific Documents Translator Crime Lab Analyst Polymer Chemist Cosmetic Chemist Quality Control Chemist

Chemists…What do they look like?

Why is Chemistry Important? Chemicals/Chemists

Objectives: TLW understand why chemistry is important to our daily lives. Distinguish between science and pseudoscience. TLW evaluate what chemists do and what they look like. TLW distinguish between science and pseudo-science.

SPI’s & CLE’s: CLE 3221.Inq.1 Recognize that science is a progressive endeavor. CLE Investigate the characteristic properties of matter. CLE Explore the interactions between matter and energy.

What is Science? Depending on whom you ask, you may get very different answers. However, it is generally agreed that for something to be considered a field of science two things must be true. Chemistry definitely meets these two criteria. Process of gaining knowledge A body of knowledge

Chemistry: The Central Science A basic understanding of chemistry is central to all sciences – biology, physics, Earth science, ecology, and others. BRANCHAREAS OF EMPHASIS ORGANIC CHEMISTRYCarbon containing chemicals INORGANIC CHEMISTRYMatter that doesn’t contain carbon PHYSICAL CHEMISTRYChanges of matter/energy changes INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRYChemical processes in industry ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY Matter and the environment ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRYComponents of substances BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRYProcesses of living organisms

What is a chemical….chemistry? Chemical- any substance that has a definite composition / matter (everything). Chemistry – the study of the interactions of matter.

Where does Chemistry Exist? We're surrounded by chemistry in everyday life. 1.Digestion 2.Breathing 3.Energy(Sun)

Chemistry Around the House Toothpaste involves at least three chemicals, if not more: Fluoride Baking Soda Peroxide

Applications of Chemistry: Chemistry helps us understand what the ozone layer is and how it protects us….which led to the development of sunscreen (protection).

Chemistry for Dinner Baking (chemistry)…too much or too little of any ingredient throws off the reactions needed for baking. The dough won't rise or the cake will be flat. Vitamin water and vitamin-fortified cereal are both examples of chemistry in food. When soda fizzes up, that’s chemistry too.

What is a model? A visual, verbal, or mathematical explanation of experimental data.

Check For Understanding Example Application: Importance of Chemistry What is chemistry? Why do we learn science? Important Fact:

Summative Assessment 1.Why is chemistry called the central science? 2.Which branch of chemistry studies the composition of substances? 3.Which branch of chemistry studies the environmental impact of chemicals? 4.What is a chemical? 5.Where does chemistry exist?

Home Work: Why is chemistry important? Homework: Quiz (engrade.com)

Closure Describe an application of environmental chemistry that is important to your daily life. Example: The drinking water that we get out of the faucet has been treated with sodium hypochlorite to prevent bacteria growth that can make us sick.
