Most houses in Britain have Christmas Trees which they decorate and put the presents under. The decorating of a Christmas Tree is usually a family occasion.

At first, Christmas trees were decorated with candles. Today, candles have been replaced by little coloured electric lights.

Other popular decorations are chocolate coins or chocolate shapes, tinsel and small ornaments which hang from the branches.

The most Famous Christmas Tree in Britain is set up in London, near the statue of Lord Nelson in Trafalgar Square, and is decorated with great ceremony each year.

Another popular tradition is singing Christmas Carols – songs about Jesus and the time when he was born.

Today people go from house to house singing carols and collecting money for charity.

Father Christmas is an English version of Santa Claus. He is an old jolly man with white hair, a beard and a moustache. He is dressed in a red suit outlined in white. Father Christmas and his elves make all the toys for Christmas in his home in the North Pole.

Children write letters to Father Christmas to tell him what they want for Christmas.

On Christmas Eve Father Christmas puts all the toys onto his sleigh and rides across the sky with his reindeer. The most famous one is Rudolf, who leads the way with his red nose.

Father Christmas enters the houses down the chimney at midnight and places presents for the children in stockings or bags by their beds or in front of the family Christmas tree.

People in Great Britain like to send Christmas Cards to their friends and family. Traditionally, Christmas cards showed religious pictures of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. Today it is more common to see Father Christmas.

A Traditional English Christmas Dinner is the main Christmas meal and is traditionally eaten at mid-day or early afternoon.

It includes a roast turkey or goose, Brussels sprouts, roast potatoes and lashings of hot gravy.

For dessert they eat a rich, fruity pudding which is doused in flaming brandy – said to ward off evil spirit. This pudding is called is Christmas Pudding.

Traditionally a Christmas Cracker is placed next to each plate on the Christmas dinner table. When the crackers are pulled, out falls a colourful party crown, a toy or gift and a festive joke.

Thus, these are the most popular Christmas Traditions in Great Britain.

Thank you for your attention!
