EARTHQUAKES by: Makenzie Kimber

What is an earthquake?  Earthquakes are when the tectonic plates in the earth rub together to cause shaking of the ground witch causes an earthquake. Earthquakes can happen all over the world including in the water.

What causes earthquakes?  An earthquake is caused by tectonic plates rubbing together deep in the earth.

Where do earthquakes happen?  Earthquakes happen everywhere because tectonic plates are beneath us wherever we go.

Why does the ground shake during an earthquake?  The ground shakes because the tectonic plates rub together and overlap each other and because the tectonic plates are right under the ground it also cause the ground to shake.

What are aftershocks  Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that occur right after an earthquake has happened.

How are earthquakes and tsunamis related?  They are related because a tsunami is an earthquake in the water therefore causing large waves that can flood where you live. That is tsunami.

How do scientists measure earthquakes?  The magnitude of most earthquakes is measured on the Richter scale, invented by Charles F. Richter in 1934.

Can scientists predict earthquakes?  No scientists can not predict earthquakes. They have tried many things but none of them would predict when an earthquake will happen. They can predict where it happens but it is not always right. The best they can do though is pick up some vibration but by the time they can it is too late. Scientists actually think the next earthquake will occur in the San Francisco Bay area over the next 30 years is 67% chance.

Environmental effects of an earthquake  Earthquakes can cause land slides, death and destruction of buildings, plumbing and electrical structures. Once an earthquake has hit it also causes aftershocks and tsunamis which can also course major destruction.
