Who Is NFI  Non-profit, non-partisan, non-sectarian organization  Founded in 1994 to combat the most consequential social trend of our time: Widespread Fatherlessness in the Lives of Our Nation’s Children

NFI’s Mission: To improve the well-being of children by increasing the proportion of children growing up with involved, responsible, and committed fathers in their lives.

Overview

24/7 Dad™  A unique, comprehensive set of fatherhood programs  Developed by nationally and internationally recognized fathering and parenting experts  Includes a basic (AM) and in-depth (PM) program

Designed to provide a comprehensive set of tools, strategies, and exercises for fathers of all races, religions, cultures, and backgrounds to help them become the kinds of fathers their children and families need them to be.

 Focuses on holistic approach to fatherhood — physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual involvement of fathers in their children’s lives.  Emphasizes men’s health, helping fathers form positive relationships in their community, and, importantly, ensuring that a father’s relationship with the mother of his children is healthy and vital.  Group and one-on-one delivery options 24/7 Dad™

 Building a fatherhood program is like building a pyramid — it needs values, principles, and a strong foundation (philosophy) on which to stand. Begin With a Solid Foundation

NFI developed the 24/7 Dad™ programs based on a philosophy that supports the growth and development of fathers and children as caring, compassionate people who treat themselves, others, and the environment with respect and dignity. The Philosophy

Value One: A positive self-worth is critical to the ability to nurture one’s self, others, and the environment. Value Two: Empathy forms the foundation of nurturing fathering and parenting. Value Three: Fathers empower their children to make good choices and wise decisions through the use of their children’s strong will and personal power. The Values of the 24/7 Dad™ Programs

Value Four: Discipline is the practice of teaching children to be respectful, cooperative, and contributing members to a family and society. Value Five: Humor, laughter, and fun promote happiness in families, an optimistic view of life, an outlet for stress reduction, and the chance to make living together as a family enjoyable. The Values of the 24/7 Dad™ Programs

The Principles The philosophy of the 24/7 Dad™ programs is built upon nine principles — natural laws or fundamental truths about fathering and parenting that cut across social, racial and geographic characteristics. 1. Fathering/parenting is a process that leads to the development of a product. 2. People learn on two levels: cognitive (knowledge- head) and affective (feelings-stomach).

The Principles (Continued) 3.Experiential learning that leads to self-discovery is the key to learning. 4.Nurturing fathers are born out of nurturing men. 5.Positive self-worth plays a significant role in becoming a nurturing father/parent. 6.Fathering and parenting is a family affair. To maximize effectiveness, all members have to participate.

The Principles (Continued) 7.Fathering and parenting are roles. It is important not to lose yourself in being a father. 8.Nurturing oneself is an important aspect of nurturing children. 9.Change is evolutionary; not revolutionary.

The philosophy, morals, and values that underlie the 24/7 Dad™ programs lead to the five characteristics (what you do) that exemplify the traits and qualities (who you are) of a devoted and nurturing Father. They are: Self-Awareness, Caring for Self, Fathering Skills, Parenting Skills and Relationship Skills Characteristics of the 24/7 Dad

24/7 Dad™ Assessment Tools  Closing Comments & Evaluation  Given at the end of each of the first 11 sessions:  Measures fathers’ acquisition of the learning competencies taught during the session  Helps the fathers identify the most pertinent things they learned and the likelihood they will use what they learned.  Fathering Survey  Measures the effectiveness of the entire program after fathers complete it. If used pre and post-program, shows how fathers’ knowledge and skills improved during the course of the program.

24/7 Dad™ Impact "I understand a lot more about how being there for your children is very important... If I had to do it over again, I'd take it up again." "I thought I knew everything about kids and stuff... but there's more to it. I feel like a real man." "24/7 Dad™ has just really opened their eyes to how to really become a 24/7 Dad. The topics were very fitting. We were trying to let these gentlemen know that they can be responsible, they can be that positive role model for their children.“ — 24/7 Dad Facilitator "I've learned more from these classes than I've learned from 33 years of living about being a dad."

24/7 Dad™ Impact “The program has given us a viable and more helpful option than jail — which is really what we had before. Among the 17 to 20 that we started with, they are all making at least partial payment. From some we had not seen a dime in years.” — District Attorney

24/7 Dad™ Evaluation  Findings from an evaluation completed by fathers in the AM program show 15 items on the assessment tool had statistically significant movement and 26 items show some increase in mean score from pre to post!  Findings from an evaluation completed by fathers in the PM program show 35 items had increased mean scores from pre to post!
