Copyright 2007 – Biz/ed Introduction In the last session you found out about the key stages involved in recruitment and selection in the travel and tourism industry. Now let’s take it on to the next level.

Copyright 2007 – Biz/ed An Interview? Great News! If you ’ ve made it this far and been invited for an interview, you know certain important things: you have the right mix of experience and qualifications for the job you have the right personal attributes and skills for the job your application was well presented in an appropriate format

Copyright 2007 – Biz/ed What’s an Interview About? Interviews are your chance to show that: the impression you created in your application was correct you can present yourself effectively you could be someone that would fit in well with others in the organisation you have prepared well for the interview

Copyright 2007 – Biz/ed A Natural Fear of Interviews Many people face the prospect of interviews with a sense of trepidation: too much pressure to perform well not a ‘natural’ presenter to others But these people wrongly assume that you are either born with interview ability or not.

Copyright 2007 – Biz/ed Interviewing Skills can be Learned In truth, good interviewing skills are very rarely natural. They have to be learned and then sharpened by experience. Let ’ s start that process here!

Copyright 2007 – Biz/ed Preparation There’s a lot more to this than just having smart clothes: It’s also about finding out about the organisation you’re applying to It’s about remembering what you said in your application Also, it’s about the practicalities of the day itself – travel, time and turning in a performance

Copyright 2007 – Biz/ed Appearance Taking care that your appearance is appropriate for the organisation and the job on offer is vital. Aim to give the right impression as well as making sure you are comfortable – wearing new shoes is not always a good idea!

Copyright 2007 – Biz/ed Performance An interview is a form of acting. You are expected to put in a performance. This means anticipating questions and practicing responses. You should also ask ‘good’ questions of the interviewers.
