Hi my name is Maddie Garrett and I am pursuing a career in Trauma Surgery.

WHERE I AM NOW? I will graduate Buford High School in May The classes I have taken or am taking at BHS will help me pursue a minor in Spanish and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. My current GPA is 4.0

AFTER GRADUATING HS I WILL ATTEND………. I will attend the University of Georgia. I will pursue a B.S. degree in Biology. I need 25 hours of Bio, 3-5 hours in organismal bio, 3-5 hours in laboratory, and 9 hours of electives. I will need 39 hours per semester. My 9 elective hours will be in Spanish. Through the class I will study abroad in Peru for the medical maymester. I will attend for 4 years.

AFTER RECEIVING A B.S. IN Biology I will take the MCAT. Then I will apply to Med school at Duke University and pursue a Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine(DO). I will be in Med school for 4 years. I will apply for a General Surgery residency at the Duke hospital. After that is completed I will apply for the one year fellowship in Surgical Critical Care.

REQUIREMENTS FOR TRAUMA SURGEON? LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION? I must take the United States Medical Licensing Examination in order to practice. The General Surgery Qualifying Examination, followed by the General Surgery Certifying Examination, and if I pass I then will take the Surgical Critical Care (SCC) Certifying Examination. TRAINING(FELLOWSHIP?) I will enter a one to two year fellowship in Critical Care and Trauma. CAREER SKILLS NEEDED? A Trauma Surgeon needs good communication skills, must have good critical thinking skills, can preform under intense pressure, and must work well in teams. SALARY? The average salary is about $280,000 per year. EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK? The number of physician and surgeon jobs is suppose to grow 22% by 2018

I WILL WORK AT __________? I will most likely work in a number one trauma center after completing my fellowship. My dream job is to work at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, so I can be close to my family again and raise my kids in Buford.
