What environmental threats do our parks face today? 1) Air Pollution -Air quality problems poison plants, animals and block out the views. 2) Water Issues - Water sources to parks are being depleted because of population growth on neighboring cities 3) Climate Change - As temperatures increase glacier national parks may melt and species of animals and plants will suffer. 4) Foreign Invaders - As invasive species increase in population and diversity native species will soon be forced to seek a new habitat or die. -6,500 non-native invasive species have been found in U.S. national parks
Yosemite National Park 1) Yosemite is affected by the pollution that is made outside the park. 2) Yosemite park faces some invasive species like the New Zealand mud slug can cover a whole river streambed. 3) Yosemite park also faces large fires, as temperatures increase the moister in the plants decreases increasing the fuel for a fire. 4) As cities form near the park the light affects the normal hunting patterns of nocturnal animals.
Yosemite Some solutions to the problems that Yosemite park faces 1. Control the air pollution that is made outside the park 2. Control the spread of the invasive species 3. For fires just have constant surveillance for when a fire might start so that authorities are prepared to do the proper procedure. 4. If you ask people and the city councils to only turn on the necessary lights.
Buffer Zone Buffer Zone- Is the region near the border of a protected area. A transition zone between areas managed for different objectives.
Habitat Corridors Habitat Corridor- Is a strip of land that aids in the movement of species between disconnected areas of their natural habitat.
Questions? - If we protect he wilderness than the species that live in those environments will have more apt conditions for their reproduction and prosperity. - The controversy surrounding the conservation of wilderness is that people may argue that this land is necessary for the development of cities and agriculture is in high demand.
