Objectives The students will develop an understanding of how culture and experience influence people’s perceptions of places and regions. The student will be able to label the Northern and Southern states on a United States map. The student will be able to identify the differences in lifestyles of the people in the North and the people in the South.

Vocabulary Words Secede – to pull away from Confederacy – the group of Southern states who seceded from the North during the Civil War Union – to stay together as one, also the group of northern states during the Civil War

Review What is the Civil War? The Civil War is when two parts of the same country are fighting against one another. What were they fighting for? Some didn’t want slavery and they had different ways of life. Who wanted slaves and why? The south wanted slaves to help farm the large plantations.

Free and Slave States “Since the North and the South could not agree, the South decided to pull away or “secede” from the Northern states and form the Confederate states. The Northern states that were still together were called the Union.”

First, trace the outline of the Slave states (using mine as a guide). Then, trace the outline of the Free states out west- this includes California, Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Next, trace the Eastern Free States. The only tricky part of the area near Minnesota. The Missouri River was the border and that’s not shown on the map I used. So, you will need to approximate a bit and put part of North and South Dakota included in the Free States. Everything else is part of the Territories. Once the students have traced, they can finish coloring everything. Students will cut out the map and the label and glue into their notebooks landscape. Cut out you map and trace out the borders for the states. color the free states blue and the slave states grey. Then color the territories red.

The North had more people, more money, didn’t want slaves, had factories, etc. The South had fewer states, wanted slaves, had plantations, etc.
