Digital Photography: Nikon D-90 External Controls Lesson 1 Instructor: Ms. Davis

How an SLR camera works In an SLR (single lens reflex) camera, you see the actual image that the sensor will see. The camera has a slanted mirror positioned between the shutter and the lens, with a piece of glass and a prism positioned above it. The image bounces off the lower mirror on to the glass, which serves as a projection screen. The prism's job is to flip the image on the screen, so it appears right side up again, and redirect it on to the viewfinder window. Pressing the shutter, you hear the click of the mirror flipping up, getting out of the way to expose the sensor or film element lens 2 - Reflex mirror 3 - Focal-plane shutter 4 - Sensor 5 - Matte focusing screen 6 - Condenser lens 7 - Pentaprism 8 - Eyepiece
