USING LAMS AT PERTH COLLEGE Dawne Hodkinson Community Learning Manager

WHAT IS LAMS? Learning Activity Management System –Developed in Australia at Macquarie University by Prof James Dalziel Limitations of monolothic VLEs –Transmission model –Content v Process view of education –Vendors confident sector not looking for changes –Showcased in February 2003 Trialled (with DfES support) in May 2003 –JISC project began September 2004 –LAMS became OpenSource Feb 2005

Why use LAMS? Focus on pedagogy, not technology Easy to develop sequences –Modification for re-use –Develop “bank” of sequences –Encourage sharing of expertise as well as content Runs as a web application Flexibility for the teacher –short chunks through to longer sequences Variety of tools –Collaboration –Monitoring –Testing –Survey

LAMS AT PERTH COLLEGE Who –2 nd year HND students Not familiar with any other e-learning tools –Very experienced lecturer ILT Co-ordinator for Faculty How –Direction to resources (internal and external) –Discussion fora –Monitoring –Testing Evaluation –Feed into the JISC project evaluation –Consider the possibility of integration with new UHI VLE (based on Bodington) Possibilities –Initial teacher training

To a live sequence … ….. hopefully

LAMS for the future ….. Improved look and feel –Rich text editor –Off-line text editing VLE integration –Bodington, Moodle, WebCT, Blackboard Branching/Grouping Wizard –LAMS Express Instant Messaging Tools interface –To allow users to develop their own tools Import/Export for IMS LD LAMS Community/Sharing Website
