Ceramics I May 2011 Fill in the blanks #1-5 on the MYSTERY FIGURES Handout

2oth c Sculptors: Modeled Henry Moore ( ) Amedeo Modigliani ( ) Alberto Giacometti ( ) Surrealism

HENRY MOORE: Monumental Figures: Warrior Odalisque Madonna Family Group space modeled Biomorphic smooth surface organic curvilinear additive

Mystery Figures: 1. Broken into several parts, it is possible to walk inside this vast, landscape sculpture 2. Carved from wood, the knotholes and wood grain determine the shape of this figure. The spaces are as important as the shapes 3. A perfect example of Moore’s enclosed space, the negative spaces in this work have become as important as the positive spaces 4. The stylized but realistic work was influenced by Greek and Roman art 5. The segmented head of this tall, angular and linear standing figure resembles that of an insect

Modeling a Figure: Sculpt a clay figure that incorporates Henry Moore’s unique concept of “enclosed space” by “opening up” spaces around the shapes. Begin by creating a biomorphic abstraction of the monumental figures: WARRIOR MADDONNA ODALISQUE drawn in the earlier class (biomorphism is a description of an unknown organic species that follows its own laws of growth) Consider how to stylize or simplify the curvilinear shape of the figure into basic organic forms, weighted in some areas by gravity and opening interior spaces in other areas by attaching the appendages to the torso

Henry Moore Figure Reflection 1. Make a POSITIVE statement about the technical qualities of the work 2. ASK a question about the formal qualities of the work Unity – how parts contribute to the whole Balance – symmetry, asymmetry Rhythm – repetition of a theme, shape or design Dominance – the importance as it related to all other aspects 3. Make a SUGGESTION about the expressive qualities: Tension – tranquil, dynamic, powerful, lumpish, relaxed, conflicting Mood – whimsical, playful, clumsy, mysterious, reflexive, austere, quiet Ideal– fearless, heroic, majestic, noble, authoritative, commonplace

2oth c Sculptors: Modeled Henry Moore ( ) Amedeo Modigliani ( ) Alberto Giacometti ( ) Surrealism

Drawing Stylized Giacometti Figures: Walking Man: (page 3) Freeze a figure in motion to capture the elongated form that is characteristic of Alberto Giacometti’s figures Portrait Bust: (page 6) Draw a disproportionally large base to balance a figure in space that mimics Alberto Giacometti’s tall, thin, elongated features: Tiny head, long neck, large shoulders Dog: (pages 8-9) Emphasize the elongation of body parts by distorting the shape of the a torso and stretching out the legs and the tail

Using an Armature in Sculpture: Portrait Bust: (page 6) Use a proportionally large base to balance a figure in space that mimics Alberto Giacometti’s tall, thin, elongated features: Tiny head, long neck, large shoulders Dog: (pages 8-9) Emphasize the elongation of body parts by distorting the shape of the a torso and stretching out the legs and the tail Walking Man: (page 3) Use the armature with added clay to recreate the rough surface texture characteristic of Alberto Giacometti’s figures

Amadeo Giacometti Figure Reflection 1. Modigliani Quiz:

Modigliani Quiz: 1 Modigliani had pleurisy, typhoid fever and TB as a youth 2 His only daughter was called Jeanne 3 He was Roman Catholic 4 His initial interest was sculpture 5 He spend half of his life in Paris 6 He spent some time in Spain in His mother ran a school in the family home 8 Brancusi was a source of inspiration for him 9 According to Picasso, Modigliani was the best- dressed artist in Paris 10 He was a flamboyant bohemian 11 Modigliani painted the people of Africa 12 He looked at art of Africa 13 He created bronze sculpture 14 He liked to paint, draw and sculpt 15 He was a soldier in WWI

Modi’s Created Stylized portraits of his friends and family in Paris. Even though he observed the person he painted, he used his imagination to create a stylized image with simplified lines and shapes An easy way to learn to draw the full figure is by drawing the figure from a back view. Drawing a figure from the back minimizes details, stresses shape, and eliminates the face. An easy way to learn to draw the full figure is to make your composition interesting and exciting: draw the full figure from a back view to minimize details, stresses shape and contour. Find a partner and take turns...

Modi’s Portraits: Make your composition emphasize the following elements of design: Line - Shape - Form geometrical shape elongated form contour line linear pattern

Modi’s Cultural Influences Modigliani liked to incorporate some of the features of Khmer, African, Egyptian, and Cycladic art into his sculptures. List at least three similarities between these cultural influences and his sculptural busts: 1. Khmer 2. African 3. Egyptian 4. Cycladic

Modigliani’s Cultural Influences Even though he was influenced by all of these cultures, he still created a style that was all his own. List at least three differences between his sculptures and his cultural influences: 1. Khmer 2. African 3. Egyptian 4. Cycladic

Modigliani Inspired Bust: Work from a live model to draw a person's head and face using exaggeration to communicate emotion. Consider the inner temperament or spirit of the model in order to incorporate a specific facial expression Use the clay to form a person's head. Make the shapes and planes of the face and fit together in a 2/3:1/3 ratio Add the features of the face using almond- shaped eyes, a mouth shaped like a half circle and with hair carved in a linear pattern
