COULD WE LIVE ANYWHERE OTHER THAN EARTH ? INVESTIGATED BY HEATHER!

WHAT WE NEED TO LIVE! Oxygen! Liquid water, H2O! Food! Sunlight to provide energy & warmth!

Other planets…. Mercury:-closest to the sun. There is hardly any atmosphere. No oxygen. The side nearest the sun has a temperature of 427oC. Water boils at 100oC. The side away from the sun has a temperature of -183oC. Water freezes at 0oC. There is no liquid water. We can’t live here as it is too hot, too cold, no oxygen and no water.

Venus The second closest planet to the sun. Temperature:- 464oC. Too hot. Atmosphere:- CO2. We can’t breath. Pressure:-100 times that of Earth. We would be crushed. No liquid water. The rain is sulphuric acid. We can’t live here.

Mars Most like Earth in size. Atmosphere:-mainly CO2. Temperature:- 20oC at equator,-125oC at the poles. Lots of ice at the South Pole but no liquid water. We won’t become Martians any time soon!

Jupiter Largest planet in our solar system. 1,000 Earths would fit inside it. It’s a giant ball of gas and liquid. Atmosphere:- mostly hydrogen. Temperature:- ranges from -145oC to 21oC. The red spot is a gigantic storm moving across the planet. I would not like to live here even if I could!

Saturn A ball of gas famous for it’s 7 main rings of rock and ice. Atmosphere:- hydrogen and helium. Temperature:- at top of clouds -175oC. Winds can reach up to 1,600km per hour. It has the lowest density of any planet. It could even float in water if you could get enough. It would not be pleasant to try and live here!!

Uranus A ball of gas and liquid. Winds can reach 900km/h. Atmosphere:- Hydrogen, helium and methane. Temperature:- coldest planet in the solar system -224oC I wouldn’t choose to live here!

Neptune Furthest from the sun. Four times larger than earth. Atmosphere:- Helium, hydrogen and methane. Frozen methane clouds make it look blue. Temperature:- -218oC Not a very pleasant place!

Moons. Most of the planets have moons orbiting them. None of them are useful for us to live on. Earth’s moon. People have lived here. To do this astronauts have to use a lot of technology to take what they need to survive with them.

Technology. To survive in space or on the moon we must go in spaceships which carry our food, water And oxygen. People must wear spacesuits to walk around outside spaceships. That would be okay for a little while but no way to live your life.

International Space Station This is the first man made accommodation where people can live in space for a long time. The first part was launched in 1998 and 16 countries work together sending people and equipment to it. The station always has people working on it. Astronauts can live there for up to six months. There is no gravity, no fresh air and you depend on machines and supplies from earth to help you survive. Not a very relaxing way to live.

Can we live anywhere other than earth? Using machines we can survive in space for a short while. We can’t survive on any other planets or moons in this solar system. Unless we find ways to change the other planets, or find a place just like Earth and can get there then, at the moment, NO we can’t live a normal life anywhere other than Earth.

Home Sweet Home Since this is our only world we should look after it because we have nowhere else we can live.
