Overview Elsevier Connect article published on May 7, university-expanded-to-offer-stem-degrees university-expanded-to-offer-stem-degrees Through National Science Foundation (NSF) grant funding, Harris- Stowe State University transformed in six years to offer STEM degree programs and STEM related activities. Highlights Harris-Stowe State University’s numerous contributions to moving the STEM needle with student engagement.

Projected Growth for STEM Careers ( ) Nationally: (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) –Vilorio (2014) reports that STEM employment will expand to more than 9 million jobs. An increase of about 1 million jobs over 2012 employment levels. Missouri: (State of St. Louis STEM Workforce 2014 report) –STEM occupations will expand by 10.2% compared to 8.5% for non-STEM occupations. St. Louis: (State of St. Louis STEM Workforce 2014 report) –STEM occupations will expand by 12.4% compared to 9.2% for non-STEM occupations.

Labor Supply and Demand 2008 National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Digest of Education Statistics; Science & Engineering Indicators 2012 report by the US Congress Joint Economic Committee stated that “…despite the clear demand for STEM talent by domestic employers, the US is failing to produce an ample supply of workers to meet the growing needs of both STEM and non-STEM employers.”

Labor Supply and Demand in Saint Louis, Missouri 2014 Labor Supply and Demand report by the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center (MERIC) stated that “…in the St. Louis Workforce Investment Area in 2013, there were over 23,000 job ads in Science and Technology and only 2,044 jobseekers looking for jobs in those areas, making a gap of 27.8% between job demand and worker supply.” 2014 State of the St. Louis STEM Workforce STLCC.edu/STLworkforce

Science and Mathematics Academy

7 tips to excel as a freshman in STEM Be prepared for classes, read ahead of schedule, and study your notes on a regular basis. Regularly attend classes and review the course syllabus. Maintain an organized notebook, including all related course materials. Meet with the professors during scheduled office hours and ask specific questions for clarification. Take advantage of undergraduate research opportunities. Participate in related extracurricular activities, such as an on- campus science or mathematics club. Time management is critical; balance the time between school, work and personal life.

Undergraduate Research Davinelle Daniels won 2 nd place honors in Science at the 2014 Undergraduate Research & Graduate School (URGS) Retreat hosted by UT Knoxville. David Marango and Dr. Ann Podleski won 2 nd place honors in the Mathematics and Statistics category at the 2012 Emerging Researchers National (ERN) Conference in STEM. Krystal Chandler won 1 st place honors in Genetics at the 2014 Emerging Researchers National (ERN) Conference in STEM.
