Spelling City Web 2.0 Presentation

What is Spelling City? An interactive educational site used to help children of all ages improve their spelling skills and expand their vocabulary. Widely used by teachers and parents to teach students how to spell by creating and saving individual and unique spelling lists. Well rounded spelling program that includes comprehension practice

How Did It Start? SpellingCity was created by a group of parents who felt there was a need to create a useful educational site. Designs started in 2005, but the site went live in January 2007.

How Is It Being Used? Spelling practice at home and at school Handouts as supplement Interactive fun/learning Workstations or “center time” Replacing the paper and pencil method Parent/Teacher communication Handwriting

In Ms. Vega’s Classroom… Makes differentiation easy! (ELL) Technology Station Teaching feature for additional practice Games as rewards Replace paper practice tests Handwriting practice Homework activities Spelling is now fun!!

Features Printable worksheets Automatic scoring Lists that are easy to revisit Immediate remediation Fun games

Reminder…. Lists can include: Countries, states, capital cities Days of the week, months of the year All animals Contractions (don’t, can’t, won’t)

Reminder… Lists can not include: Non-capital cities, rivers, mountains or other elements of geography Profanity Proper nouns Abbreviations (Mrs., St., Dr., etc.)

Reminder… SpellingCity only includes one use for each spelling of each word. Examples: –mayflower (sentence is about a flower, not a historic ship) –Turkey (sentence is about the country, not the bird) –May (the month, not the verb)
