HEALTHCARE IN SWITZERLAND BY MARGARET WOLK

WHERE IS SWITZERLAND? The Swiss flag became a symbol of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement founded in 1863, by Henri Dunant. It is an international humanitarian movement founded to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering.

HEALTHCARE FACTS Healthcare in Switzerland is universal (which means that it provides health care and financial protection to all its citizens) and is regulated by the Swiss Federal Law on Health Insurance.

WHAT IS THE SWISS FEDERAL LAW ON HEALTH INSURANCE? This law institutes: Mandatory healthcare insurance An optional insurance scheme to compensate for the loss of daily earnings Provides for payments in case of sickness, accidents (unless covered by a separate accident insurance policy) And maternity.

Average life expectancy: years Percentage of the GDP that is spent on health care: 11.4% of GDP History of life expectancy:

HOW DOES HEALTHCARE IN SWITZERLAND AFFECT THE COMMON SWISS PERSON? Swiss are required to purchase basic health insurance, which covers a range of treatments (detailed in the Swiss Federal Law on Health Insurance). An insured person pays the insurance premium (for the basic plan), which is up to 8% of their personal income. If a premium is higher than this, the government gives them a cash subsidy to pay for any additional premium.

SWISS SYSTEM OF HEALTH INSURANCE Health insurance in Switzerland is not an integral part of the social insurance system. It is a personal insurance Everyone living in Switzerland with the exception of the categories mentioned in the information note is required to join one of the recognized Swiss health insurances.

HOW WOULD OUR SMOKER DO IN SWITZERLAND? In Switzerland, approximately 2,500 and 1,200 new cases are diagnosed each year representing the second and the third most frequent tumor in men and women. One of the main objectives of Swiss cancer registries is to provide careful surveillance of trends in cancer survival in order to have comprehensive data for cancer control.
