Italy is a peninsula in Europe that juts out into the Mediterranean Sea. It's about the size of Arizona. It is in Southern Europe. Its coordinates are 43˚ North and 13˚ East. Italy's area is 116,305 sq. miles. LOCATION Map of Europe

History Here are some very important times for Italy: 752 B.C.- Rome is founded 79 A.D.- Mt. Vesuvius destroys Pompeii and Herculaneum 320 A.D.- The first St. Peter's church is built 1861 A.D.- Italy becomes a unified nation 1914 A.D.- World War 1 starts 1915 A.D.- Italy joins the side of the Allies in World War A.D.- Italians vote for Italy to become a Republic and it did 2002 A.D.- The Lira is replaced by the Euro (currency) Bodies left from Mt. Vesuvius' eruption.

Do You Know the Regions of Italy? In Italy, the north half is very mountainous. The South is more grassy and there is lots of farmland. There are two major islands in Italy: Sicily and Sardinia.There are also two major mountain ranges. The Alps and Apennines. The Alps run east to west on the northern border. GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY GOVERNMENT Italy was a monarchy until 70 years ago. In 1946 Italy became a democratic republic. Now, the prime minister is Mario Monti. ECONOMY For many years, Italy's currency had been the Italian lira. But recently, in 2002 the currency was changed to the euro. Italy makes a lot of money on tourism. Many people come from around the world to see amazing sights and taste the delicious foods. Euro Prime Minister

RELIGION In Italy, although there is freedom of religion, 85% of the population is Roman Catholic. Only 20% of the Roman Catholics participate in services of worship. The other 15% of the population is Jewish, Muslim, or another religion. The Pope

Shelter The population of Italy is about 58 million. So where does everyone live? Lots of people live in the city in apartments. Others live in modern houses you'd see on your block. Random Italian housing

FAMILY In Italy, it is important to have a good bond with your family. Families help each other out when someone makes a mistake. Usually, when someone moves out of their parents' house, they live close to their parents. Mother usually do all of the cleaning and cooking and the father makes the money. Grandparents often help raise children. An Italian Family

VALUES Italians value many things. They value the handshake, and they value cleanliness. They value niceness, and they value timeliness. They value family, and they value health. They value social interactions, and they value financial safety. Handshake

FOOD Italy is famous for its many delicious dishes. Its most famous dishes are pasta dishes. They cook so many different kinds. From spaghetti to linguini, from baked ziti to ravioli. If you ever visit Italy, it is going to be very hard to decide what you want to eat. Pasta with tomato sauce

CLOTHING Imagine you're walking down a sidewalk and it's packed. What's everyone wearing? Probably jeans and a sweat shirt, maybe shorts and a T-shirt. In Italy, they're probably wearing similar things. But Italians are also known for fashion. Milan, a city in northern Italy, is famous for its clothing designers such as Giorgio Armani and Gianni Versace. Random Italians

Entertainment, Hobbies, and Sports In Italy, the the most popular sport is futbol (soccer). Italy has one of the best futbol teams in the world. They won the World Cup in People love to watch futbol games and support their team. They find futbol very entertaining. CUSTOMS & CELEBRATIONS In Italy, on New Year's Eve, families have a huge feast. They eat lentils and pork for good luck. Carnival is celebrated 40 days before Easter. It is a huge celebration for many countries, including Italy. There are giant parades and children throw confetti at each other. People are also known to play pranks on others. During Easter in Italy, you probably won't see an Easter bunny, but you will see many interesting celebrations. For example, on Good Friday many towns have a solemn procession through the streets as they reenact Jesus' walk to death. Easter Sunday celebrates Jesus' resurrection. On Christmas Eve, they don't eat meat except for fish. In fact, they eat 7 different kinds of fish. No one really knows what they represent but some people believe that they represent the seven sacraments of the catholic church.
