Euclid and Charles L. Dodgson Presented by: Ryan Tang Y8Peace

Who was Euclid and what was “Euclid’s elements”?

Who was Charles Dodgson? -English Mathematician -Taught in Oxford University -Wrote the play Euclid and his modern rivals -Born 27 th January,1832 -Did work on geometry and matrix algebra

Similarities  Both had major influences on other mathematicians and scientists  Both mostly did work on geometry  Both had same presenting styles  Used the same methods to teach

Differences  Charles mostly did work on translation of Euclid’s work and applying knowledge in his time  Euclid made up all theories by himself  The only mathematical method Charles invented was a voting system.  Charles solved some questions using Euclid’s teachings

Conclusion  Without Euclid, geometry would have been discovered much later, causing many known methods to not exist  Without Charles’s translations and defending, people would have thought Euclid’s ways were fake and useless
