Euclid and Charles L. Dodgson Presented by: Ryan Tang Y8Peace
Who was Euclid and what was “Euclid’s elements”?
Who was Charles Dodgson? -English Mathematician -Taught in Oxford University -Wrote the play Euclid and his modern rivals -Born 27 th January,1832 -Did work on geometry and matrix algebra
Similarities Both had major influences on other mathematicians and scientists Both mostly did work on geometry Both had same presenting styles Used the same methods to teach
Differences Charles mostly did work on translation of Euclid’s work and applying knowledge in his time Euclid made up all theories by himself The only mathematical method Charles invented was a voting system. Charles solved some questions using Euclid’s teachings
Conclusion Without Euclid, geometry would have been discovered much later, causing many known methods to not exist Without Charles’s translations and defending, people would have thought Euclid’s ways were fake and useless
