ERIKSON’S STAGES Every person goes through many changes as they grow old. These stages can be characterized by a psychological “crisis”. These crisis’ must be resolved by that person before and the way they develop through each stage will effect them later in life.

STAGE 1- ROCK A BYE BABY, (UNKNOWN ARTIST) Trust vs. Mistrust. (0-12 months). Babies must be able to blindly trust their parents or their caregivers. This song represents this age because it has a soft tone and is written for babies. Lyrics: Rock A Bye Baby, On The Tree Top, When The Wind Blows, The Cradle Will Rock, When The Bow Breaks, The Cradle Will Fall, And Down Will Come Baby,Cradle and All. STAGE 2- OLD MCDONALD HAD A FARM, (ADAPTED BY SUPER SIMPLE LEARNING) Independence vs. doubt. (1-2 years). Toddlers learn to do things for themselves and learn self control and self confidence. This song represents this stage because toddlers tend to be learning animal sounds and things like this and it’s a simple song for little kids to sing along to. Lyrics: Old McDonald had a farm. STAGE 3- ABC’S SONG (ARRANGED BY A.J. JENKINS) Initiative vs. Guilt. (2-6 years old.) Motor skills develop and they become very social. This song represents this stage because children in this stage are starting to learn things like counting and the alphabet and this song helps them to learn it. Lyrics: A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H-I-J-K-L-M-N-O-P-Q-R-S-T-U-V-W-Y-Z twenty six letters from a to z (and repeat).

STAGE 4- AIRPLANES, (KIDSBOP VERSION) Industry vs Inferiority. (6-12 years old). School is important and children learn a lot as they transition from the world of home to the world of school. This song represents this stage because kidsbop is clean versions of songs that are popular (like this one that was popular when we were in this stage). But its appropriate for this age group and parents approve of it more. Lyrics: Can we pretend that airplanes In the night sky are like shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now. STAGE 5- THE MIDDLE (JIMMY EAT WORLD) Identity vs. Role Confusion. (12-18 years old). Adolescents are trying to figure out who they are at this stage, and they must integrate the resolutions of the earlier conflicts and stages to do so. This song represents this stage because it has a positive message that this age group probably needs, and adolescence can sometimes feel like it is “the middle” of life. Lyrics: Hey, don't write yourself off yet It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on. Just try your best, try everything you can. And don't you worry what they tell themselves when you're away. It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride. STAGE 6- I AM A ROCK (SIMON AND GARFUNKEL) Intimacy vs. Isolation. (19-20 Years old). Most important events are love relationships. An individual needs to have developed a strong sense of identity before this stage or they’ll fear commitment and retreat. This song represents this stage because it relates to the negative side, the isolation that you can feel at this stage. STAGE 7- FATHER AND DAUGHTER (PAUL SIMON) Generativity vs. Stagnation. (40-65) Ability to look outside oneself and care for others. This is the stage where parenting is important, adults need children as much as they need adults. This song represents this stage because its written by a father to his daughter and is about that. A time for reflecting on one’s own life and it’s role and seeing it filled with satisfaction or disappointments. This song represents this stage because he’s accepting the fact that everything has to die at some point and that’s okay.
