International Jesuit Ecology Project Good morning. My name is Nancy Tuchman, I am and Ecologists and the Director of the institute of Environmental Sustainability at Loyola University Chicago. My colleague, Dr. Michael Schuck is an ethicist at Loyola University Chicago and together we are co-Directing the IJEP;HE. HE is an electronic environmental science textbook that is integrated with an ethics and spirituality lens. It is targeted for students that are entering university level or in their final year of high school – we also hope it will be used in parishes and refugee camps with adult learners.

• the basic content of Healing Earth This morning’s presentation: • the basic content of Healing Earth • the unique features ‒ an integrated approach ‒ a global perspective ‒ a living resource

United Nations Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Report The UN’s MEA report informed the main environmental issues that we cover in the HE chapters. The MEA was conducted by hundreds of scientists, economists, and social scientists around the world, and it elucidates the major threats to the planets.

• declining biodiversity • natural resource extraction hy focus on • declining biodiversity • natural resource extraction • fossil fuels vs renewable energy • fresh water depletion • food and arable land availability and quality • global climate change Environmental threats to the planet are caused by human activities. These human activities in turn have a negative feedback on human health and well being, particularly acute impacts on the poor and the marginalized. In Healing Earth, we cross-reference between chapters to elucidate the interconnectivity of natural systems, and the ethics section of each chapter integrates the human dimension and suffering with the science.

”It cannot be emphasized enough how everything is interconnected.” Pope Francis, Laudato Si

”We are faced not with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social, but one complex crisis which is both social and environmental.” Pope Francis, Laudato Si

Lasting solutions to our interconnected ecological and social problems require an integral ecology

“An Integral Ecology . . . takes us to the heart of what it is to be human” Science Ethics Spirituality Action

Healing a Broken World Recommendation 4: Universities Develop experiential learning environments. Develop an environmental ethic on campuses. Develop curricula that address sustainability issues and impart an environmental literacy. Develop experiential learning environments where students are immersed in real-world environmental issues, learn to develop solutions, and are transformed by the experience. Develop an environmental ethic on campuses so that conservation practices become socially normative and students lead by example. Develop curricula that address sustainability issues and impart an environmental literacy.

a free, online, ‘living’ textbook in environmental science drawing on • up to date scientific knowledge • Roman Catholic social thought • Jesuit spirituality • wisdom from people around the world.

Chicago Workshop I October 2012 Chicago Workshop II February 2014

Over 90 people from 41 Jesuit and Non-Jesuit institutions in 15 countries have joined the Healing Earth team. • writing and editing text • supplying graphs, photos, links • designing the web • preparing teacher materials • hosting presentations

Global Participation Global Content “. . . solutions will not emerge from just one way of interpreting reality . . . [but from] the cultural riches of different peoples.” Pope Francis, Laudato Si

A living interaction between teachers and students . . . “The effects of the present [ecological] imbalance can only be reduced by our decisive actions, here and now.” Pope Francis, Laudato Si
