Warm-Up http://www.youtubecom/watch?v=hGhr68iq7ck This is similar to John’s Gospel because as in the song it portrays our faith very divine like. In Johns Gospel Jesus is portrayed as divine much like this song. “Power and majesty, praise to the King; Mountains bow down and the seas will roar At the sound of Your name.” ^Jesus portrayed as Mighty and Majestic.

John By: Scott Wiedmaier, Mike Bradford, Jordan Floyd, Sean Wies, Cory Benton, Pat Coan

The Eagle The Eagle sours upward. This represents how Christ has been resurrected. This also represents how Christians are risen to be with Christ when they die. The eagle also represents John the Evangelist. This is because of how Johns gospel is more theological then the others.

Jesus Jesus is portrayed as a Divine figure Jesus is the way of life He is the Resurrection He is God Faith is essential for us to gain eternal life with him in union with the father and the Holy Spirit

Biographical Backround Father Irenaeus attributed the Gospel to John, the “Beloved Disciple” of Lord. Johns brother was James, also a Apostle. Johns father was Zebedee. Today scholar believe Irenaeus may have confused John the Apostle with another John A church elder or disciple of the Apostle John

Written The Gospel was written around AD 90-100 The Gospel was written for Jewish-Christians and Gentile Christians. The Gospel was written to strengthen faith and to win converts. To combat false ideas about Jesus’ full humanity or even his divinity. To oppose the followers of John the Baptist, who was mistakenly thought to be the messiah.

Source Two major Sources Unique Signs source- a collection of miracles Passion and Resurrection Narratives- This would have been in circulation for years before any gospel had been written Unique Changing of water into wine at Cana Cure of a man born blind The raising of Lazarus

Works of John The Word of God- the first eighteen verses of Johns Gospel served as a overture or prologue to the Gospel The Book of Signs- Focused on 7 miracles Jesus preformed The Book of Glory- 2 major sections The last supper discourses and Jesus’ death and resurrection

The Word of God Theme 1: Christology from Above Christology is the study of Jesus Christ, trying to understand who he is The divinity of Jesus shines forth in almost every verse of Johns Gospel Theme 2: Major Conflicts The light of Christ versus the darkness of the world that refuses to acknowledge Jesus Life giving faith in Jesus that makes us children of God versus unbelief Truth versus untruth Theme 3: Who is Jesus? John the Baptist prefigures all the others who will testify for Jesus later in the Gospel

Sample “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

The Book of Signs The book of Signs is called this because it is organized around seven miracles 1. Changing water to wine 2. Curing of the official’s son 3. Curing of the paralytic at the pool 4. The feeding of the 5,000 5. The walking on water 6. Curing of the Blind Man 7. The raising of Lazarus

Sample Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."    They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now."  This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

The Book of Glory The last supper discourses The Resurrection of Jesus Jesus washing the feet of his disciples Jesus gives us a new commandment Love one another as I have loved you Chapter 15 Is the most important because he tells us of his love for us He is the vine , we are the branches who get our life from him The Resurrection of Jesus John reports Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene Peter was the first to enter to tomb of Jesus Jesus helps the disciples catch fish symbolic of their future role as fishers of people

Sample He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him."  In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."  "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"  Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.

Review Questions Who wrote the gospel of John? List some of the miracles discussed today. What the term miracle mean to you? Do you feel the miracles in the Book of Signs are truly miracles?  What miracle or miracles were unique to Johns Gospel? How was Jesus portrayed?
