Dayton Power and Light Patrick Slone EMS Safety Coordinator

Company’s Vision, Mission, Goals, and Objectives Put Safety First, Act with Integrity, Honor Commitments, Strive for Excellence, and Fun through Work. To every opportunity we will bring a common set of capabilities including Teamwork, Clarity, Business Agility, Ownership and Accountability, and a Market-Facing focus.

What are they? DP&L, which stands for Dayton Power and Light. They serve over 500,000 people in a 24 county range. Their primary service serves the Western part of Ohio. Their primary source of fuel is Coal

Committed to the customer It is obvious after conducting this interview that this energy company is devoted to minimizing power outages to its customer. This is an important responsibility this company has decided to take seriously and address these problems before nature makes it a problem whenever possible. More utility companies should embrace such preventive measures.

The Style of Management The leadership is responsible for day to day business operations Board of directors provides oversight with respect to the strategic direction and key policies and approves major initiatives Advises significant financial and business objectives Monitors progress with respect to such matters

Does the company focus on quality? DP&L consistently exceeds reliability standards set by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. We are a member of the 13-state Regional Transmission Organization, PJM, that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity and manages the high-voltage electric grid. For safety and reliability, Ohio and Federal regulations mandate tree trimming near power lines. DP&L trims trees along 2,100 miles of overhead distribution power lines per year on average.

What Techniques are Used to Ensure Quality There are two in ways in which DP&L ensures quality Substation Tree Trimming

Tree trimming is a preventive maintenance program that cuts back trees to prevent branches from damaging or blowing into overhead lines and causing outages. Improves safety for DP&L employees as well as customers. Tree removal decreases the chance of power outage. Mandated by Ohio and Federal Law

Substations A substation is a subsidiary station of an electricity generation, transmission and distribution system where voltage is transformed from high to low or the reverse. DP&L have added several of these new substations to areas that have increasing energy needs as part of a multi-million dollar investment. Improves customer service and the ability to better deal with power outages.

Equipment Inspections Overhead & Underground DP&L also inspects the hardware and mechanical equipment above and below ground that delivers the power to our customers over a five year cycle.

Pole Replacement We also inspect 42,500 poles every year. Between our pole replacement program and the occasional auto or other accident, we replace 1,250 to 2,500 poles in a typical year. Once every 10 years, each of the company's 340,000 poles are inspected to determine if the pole is structurally sound or has been damaged by nature, auto accidents or severe weather.

What is the company’s potential for success? During the last several years, we’ve dramatically reduced outages caused by trees and limbs falling on power lines by increasing trimming and removal of trees in the utility easement. This “right of way” is the area around our power lines and poles that needs to be clear for maintenance and to prevent trees from interfering with the operation of the lines.

Company strengths, Resources and Limitations Highly effective service - strength Multiple agencies to pull from - resources Mother nature - limitation
