Bell Ringer: DATE YOUR PAPER  Copy down the quote. In 10 lines complete formal sentences, respond to quote fully.  The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think - rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men. ~Bill Beattie

TODAY I WILL IDENTIFY DIFFERENT GOVERNMENT STRUCTURES SO THAT I CAN UNDERSTAND AND CRITIQUE DEMOCRACY AS THE AMERICAN FORM OF GOVERNMENT

What is Government?  Government is the institution through which society makes and enforces its public policies  Public policies- the things that government decides to do  Government exercises three types of power: legislative, judicial, executive  Judicial- the power to interpret laws  Legislative- the power to make laws  Executive- the power to enforce, execute, and administer laws

Types of Government  Democracy- a form of government in which the supreme authority rests with the people  Republic- the sovereign power is held in those who have the right to vote  Dictatorship- a form of government in which the leader has absolute power and authority  Autocracy- a form of government in which a single person holds unlimited power  Oligarchy- a form of government in which the power to rule is held by a small, usually self appointed elite  Parliamentary government- a form of government in which the executive branch is made up of the prime minister, or premier, and that official's cabinet  Presidential government- the executive and legislative branches of the government are separate, independent of one another, and coequal  Monarchy- a government led by a hereditary ruler

Does Population Matter?  What is a state?  Federal Government- a form of government in which powers are divided between central government and several local governments  Confederation – a joining of several groups for a common purpose

Liberty  Liberty- the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life.  How do we experience liberty today? Examples: ___________________

Economics  Free enterprise/capitalism does not rely on the government to decide what is produced, how much of it is produced, and for what price. Instead, the market or the people determine those factors  A mixed economy is one in which there is a private enterprise system in combination with government regulation and promotion The American system is a mixed economy through government regulation of transportation, antitrust laws, anti-pollution standards, etc.  Communist systems are those in which the government controls all materials and modes of production  Barter economies are usually small scale. Participants in this economy directly exchange goods and services for other goods and services  *socialist – all materials are distributed fairly

Scenario: How might a dictatorship/democracy respond?  A drought has caused massive food shortages. Your government must decide what action to take?  Your government wants to initiate a monumental program in recycling and alternative energy.  Your government wants a constitutional amendment to limit the term in which the leader can stay in office

TV is something I can ’ t live without. I always find something to watch no matter what it is. Sometimes I ’ ll watch several shows at a time. I love it so much I ’ ll watch things I ’ ve seen over and over. Although there are a number of good shows on TV, I have three that I must watch. One show that I absolutely love is Good Times. The family experiences are some that I have experienced and I can relate to them. The fights Thelma and J.J. have remind me of the ones I used to have with my own brother. They also show how to do the best with what you have even if it is only a little bit. Besides, I enjoy seeing people who look like me on TV. Another favorite show I have is SoulFood. It inspires me to make better decisions on how I deal with my own family. It shows e how to work hard on my job and in my relationships. My favorite character, Terri, is role model by the way she dresses and carries herself. I also love the relationship the sisters have and hope to have that with my own sisters. The next show I can ’ t bear to miss is Martin. His various characters keep me laughing and wanting to see more. His character, “ Dragon Fly Jones ” makes me laugh so hard that my stomach hurts. Then there is the “ dog ” he fights but only you don ’ t really know what kind of animal it is. His insults to Pam are often so hilarious, you can ’ t believe the things he says to her. Watching these shows brings me great joy. Anytime you can watch a show that makes you laugh and inspired, it is definitely a good thing. I love these shows so much, that I have even purchased DVDs of them and still watch them on the TV if they come on. If you had the opportunity to watch these shows, you would love them just as much as I do.
