Math Dept. Undergraduate Majors

Math Dept. Undergrad Majors (Can do either a BA or BS) 1) Actuarial Science Major (start in a pre-major) 2) Math Major (may only choose 1 track) a) Financial Math Track b) Theoretical/Honors Track c) Education Track d) Applied Track-Chemistry or Physics options e) Bio-Math Track

Note: You can double major in both actuarial science and one math track, but extra math requirements may be required depending in the track. Need 18 disjoint semester hours between the majors in the same college. For a dual degree (majors in different colleges), 30 need disjoint semester hours. I.E. no “double dipping or double counting”.

Requirement Structure for ALL Math Majors 1) Core requirements Math Major Seminar (not required for Honors or Actuarial) Calculus (4 quarters/3 semesters or a combo) Intro to Proofs (not required for Actuarial Science) Linear Algebra Probability & Statistics 2) Track requirements 3) Electives or Applied Area

Business and Finance Tracks Actuarial Science Major-designed for students who want to assess risk for the insurance and banking businesses Financial Math Track-designed for students who want to do number crunching in the financial market; make predictions (see Dr. David Goss, if interested in Graduate School, GRE Math subject test required! )

Business and Finance Tracks Actuarial Science Calculus Linear Algebra Probability & Statistics 1 Computer Courses Accounting Macro & Micro Economics Theory of Interest Financial Economics Business Finance Practical Experience Course Life Contingencies or Loss Models Sequence Financial Math Math Major Seminar Calculus Linear Algebra Probability & Statistics 2 Computer Courses Accounting Macro & Micro Economics Theory of Interest Financial Economics Business Finance Introduction to Proofs 2 Differential Equations courses Intro to Financial Math Beginning Scientific Computing

CRITERIA FOR ADMITTANCE (ACTUARIAL SCIENCE ONLY) Have a cum. GPA of 3.0 on OSU courses AND Either: 1. B- or better in Math 530, 4530, 5530H, or Stat 420, Stat 4201 taken at Ohio State (not transferred in) 2. Passage of one actuarial exam administered by SOA/CAS OR

Note: You can waive actuarial requirements if you can provide proof of passage of the corresponding Society of Actuarial exams. Then in order to have enough hours to graduate, you must replace the waived course with a different one. VEE (Validation by Educational Experience) courses would be appropriate.

By going through any math track, including pure math, students gain a variety of skills that make them in demand in any job market: Pure Math: Still in high demand! Strategic skills for employment and career management Good communication skills Problem solving skills Thorough analysis Critical thinking

Pure Math Honors Math Track -is designed to best prepare students for grad school in mathematics (including the Financial Math/Financial Engineering->GRE Math subject test) and grad or professional school in other subject areas Theoretical Math Track -is designed for students seeking a strong foundation in classical math; it is more generic and flexible Education Track -is designed for students seeking high school math teaching licensure **Important Note: If you are interested in going to Graduate School in any mathematical area, the Theoretical or Honors Track is highly recommended! The most well-rounded track with thorough preparation.

Honors, Theoretical, Education 1) CORE REQUIREMENTS Same for all math major tracks 2) REQUIRED COURSES FOR TRADITIONAL TRACK Differential Equations Abstract Algebra Sequence Real Analysis Sequence

3) ELECTIVE COURSES In addition to the above, students are required to complete a minimum of 6 hours selected from the following list: Calculus on Manifolds Combinatorial Math & Graph Theory Complex Analysis Discrete Modeling* Dynamical Systems Financial Economics Geometry* History of Mathematics* Intro to Financial Math Number Theory Partial Differential Equations Beg. Scientific Computing Theory of Interest Vector Analysis *Courses required for education track Note: The honors track will take courses covering same concepts but at the honors level (i.e. topics are covered in greater detail)

Science Applications Applied Math Track -is designed for students seeking a strong foundation in math and its application to the physical sciences (Physics or Chemistry) Bio-Math Track –is designed for students interested in math and biology, and/or medicine (see Dr. David Terman if interested in Graduate School in this field)

Applied Tracks 1) CORE REQUIREMENTS 2) REQUIRED COURSES FOR THE APPLIED MATH TRACK Differential Equations: Partial Differential Equations and their applications (6 hours total) Choose any 2 of the 3 Dynamical Systems Complex Analysis Beginning Scientific Computing 3) ELECTIVE COURSES In addition to the above, students are required to complete a minimum of 6 hours from Group I and 6 hours from Group II within one application option. Group I: (math courses)Group II: (applications) Real AnalysisChemistry- analytical and/or physical Vector AnalysisPhysics- dynamics of particles and waves Mathematical Principles in Science Applied Differential Geometry (Relativity Theory) Calculus of Variations & Tensor Calculus

Bio-Math 1. CORE REQUIREMENTS 2. REQUIRED BIO TRACK COURSES Ordinary Differential Equations Intro to Math Biology Upper level Molecular Genetics or Biology course Choose any 2 of the 3: o Dynamical Systems o Partial Differential Equations o Beginning Scientific Computing

3. ELECTIVE COURSES (mix and match 6 credit hours from any of these categories) Biology Evolution Introductory Ecology Molecular Genetics Microbiology Intro to Neuroscience Mathematics Advanced ODE/Dynamical System Real Analysis Complex or Vector Analysis Abstract Algebra Complex Variables Discrete Modeling Geometry Intro to Mathematical Neuroscience Others Biochemistry Organic chemistry
