French medical school Jessica DUMEZ, 3th year of GP training, SAINT ETIENNE Member of FAYR-GP ( French association of young researchers in general practice ) Jessica DUMEZ, 3th year of GP training, SAINT ETIENNE, Member of FAYR-GP 12/12/14

Jessica DUMEZ, 3th year of GP training, SAINT ETIENNE, Member of FAYR-GP

Faculté de médecine en France 40 medical faculties of the universities First year end up with final competition exam that select 7500 students (elimination 80% of the students presenting the exam) Four weeks of obligatory and non-remunerated nurse training. 2 nd year of the first cycle contains mainly theoretical lectures Jessica DUMEZ, 3th year of GP training, SAINT ETIENNE, Member of FAYR-GP 12/12/14

Faculté de médecine en France Second cycle of medical school Externship last 4 years with combination of theoretical and bedside teaching, with limited ward responsibilities. It ends up with a National Competition Exam, according to its order of merit, the student chooses his university hospital (and thus its city) of assignment, and its specialty as internship Jessica DUMEZ, 3th year of GP training, SAINT ETIENNE, Member of FAYR-GP 12/12/14

GP/FM specialization Differences from one to another university National schema : 6 semesters in 3 years : Adult emergency unit / Adult medical unit /Pediatric or obstetrician unit / GP training in 3 different places + primary health care center / autonomous GP Training / one free chosen training Night ship duties associated in each semester, up to 8 monthly ( from 6.30 pm to 9 am or 24 hours) Jessica DUMEZ, 3th year of GP training, SAINT ETIENNE, Member of FAYR-GP 12/12/14

GP trainees statute statute of a student an autonomous professional under “senior” supervision, since it can prescribe, it can carry out replacements in liberal GP offices Remunerated as employee of the hospital trough out the 3 years Possibilities of exchange in between universities for 6 months 12/12/14 Jessica DUMEZ, 3th year of GP training, SAINT ETIENNE, Member of FAYR-GP

theoretical requirements 120 hours of lectures 75 hours of “practice exchange group” supervised from one GP teacher Presence in a congress or 3 days of medical lecture for GP different from school lectures as seminars 12 presentations of a case summary with singular questions & bibliography research 1 statement of case from GP training 1 statement of case from internship 1 critical reading of published medical article 1 doctor thesis presented as an article to publish 12/12/14 Jessica DUMEZ, 3th year of GP training, SAINT ETIENNE, Member of FAYR-GP

What is good ? We learn how to have continuous improvement with regular lectures and tests delivered from revues or congresses or scientific communities We learn how to read and criticize medical articles and how to deal with “evidence based medicine” As a new specialization recognized from the French government as a GP academic dpt, we have a bright future into GP practice and primary health care research 12/12/14 Jessica DUMEZ, 3th year of GP training, SAINT ETIENNE, Member of FAYR-GP

What is bad ? About the training : Not every GP trainer spend more than 6 months in a GP office when it is going to be our future everyday life About theoretical : Not much lectures about psychological statement of the patient coming for PHC or psychological health of the GP itself Not much possibility to increase our English level for more international exchange or international publications 12/12/14 Jessica DUMEZ, 3th year of GP training, SAINT ETIENNE, Member of FAYR-GP

a GP day 10 to 20 min spent with each patient Optionally having a secretary we recognize the patient trough their personal card with health insurance number A lot of papers (prescriptions towards officinal, physical therapists, nurse, work day off, etc) Payment for each visit from the patient itself (mixed reimbursements) 12/12/14 Jessica DUMEZ, 3th year of GP training, SAINT ETIENNE, Member of FAYR-GP

a GP day GP in 2014 (still decreasing ….) Urban, half rural, rural activity 20 patients daily at the office + 1 or 2 home visits Activities in elderly nursery house, pediatric patients, gynecologic obstetric, chronic diseases Activities as teacher at medical school, lectures, “practice exchange group”, 1 teacher / 100 students (lack !!) 12/12/14 Jessica DUMEZ, 3th year of GP training, SAINT ETIENNE, Member of FAYR-GP

THANK YOU for your attention For more questions : 12/12/14 Jessica DUMEZ, 3th year of GP training, SAINT ETIENNE, Member of FAYR-GP
