Mr. Bryan Holmes Academy math, science, and aerospace teacher Background: : Physics/engineering teacher, Ridgefield : Aerospace science instructor, Danbury : US Air Force officer and pilot Aerospace and engineering experience: US Air Force Instructor pilot in three different aircraft Program manager in aircraft development and engineering Space officer working on Space Shuttle program and in satellite control

Warmup Activity Use the Engineering Design Process to make an aircraft from the materials provided in the time given: (2:00) Brainstorm your ideas (1:00) Choose a design (2:00) Build a prototype (5:00) Test it (fly it!), then redesign as needed, and retest (5:00) Present solution FLYING CONTEST: every airplane will get TWO attempts to fly the farthest Prizes for the top three performances!

Academy Curriculum Principles of Aerospace Science is: A course covering aircraft systems and aeronautics, the aerospace environment and its effect on the human body, and space systems and rockets Innovations in Aerospace will include: A hands-on class where students can design, build, and test their ideas Guest presenters from the aerospace community Science and engineering competitions Quarterly service learning projects All Academy classes will be integrated so students follow a common theme throughout the day

Partnerships The Academy will foster partnerships with agencies in aerospace and engineering Partners scheduled to participate this coming year: GKN Aerospace Civil Air Patrol Academy of Model Aeronautics Experimental Aircraft Association UCONN Engineering Ambassadors Federal Aviation Administration National Association of Rocketry More partnerships are being coordinated – I welcome any contacts or help you wish to provide.

STEM Competitions Academy students may choose from several science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) competitions All students will participate in at least one competition Competitions planned for next year: Invention Convention Science Olympiad Genes in Space Google Science Fair Engineering Encounters (formerly West Point) Bridge Design Contest NASA – Future Engineers CyberPatriot – dependent on finding mentor

Logistics Laptops – Academy students will get a Lenovo or other laptop for use in all classes. Uniform – Academy students will get a t-shirt for field trips and a lab coat for wear in the Aerospace Lab. Transportation Morning Afternoon
