ELECTRIC SPORTS CARS BY: CASEY KATZ

TIMELINE OF THE ELECTRIC CAR 1835: American Thomas Davenport is credited with building the first practical electric vehicle 1891: William Morrison od Des Moines, Iowa builds the first successful electric automobile in the United States 1976: The congress passes the Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Research 1988: The CEO of GM, Roger Smith, agrees to fund research for efforts in producing a practical consumer car 1997: The Prius is born and nearly 18,000 units are sold during the first year of production 2006: Tesla Motors reveals the first electric sports car 2012: Almost every major auto manufacturer either has an electric car on the market or has a concept that is set to be in production in the future

THE LITHIUM-ION BATTERY The use of the lithium-ion battery is what makes the electric car and especially the electric sports car special Its very light which is important when building a sports car because you need a good weight to power ratio Can be created in any shape or size which helps sports car manufacturers not be limited in body design Is rechargeable Has one of the highest battery life compared to other batteries

WHY DO WE CARE? As gas prices continue to rise, having a car with a good mile per gallon is important. Most gas powered sports cars only get on average 8-12 miles per gallon and then you have to factor in having to use premium gas In 2005 the CO2 emissions from cars was 20.4 lbs per gallon If we continue emitting that much CO2 we will have to start worrying about future health problems By having an alternative energy source for vehicles, we wont have to depend on foreign or domestic oil supplies
