Impact of Scots on the Empire

Liberal MP Sir Charles Dilke 1888 “In British settlements, from Canada to Ceylon, from Dunedin to Bombay, for every Englishman that you meet who has worked himself up to wealth from small beginnings without external aid, you find ten Scotchmen.”

Emigration Men and women taking advantage of new life abroad and a new beginning, mainly at the time in North America , 50,000 Scots from the West of Scotland went to NA. Drive and determination instantly made them a hit in tobacco and economic industries.

Education, Religion and Influence. Scottish people had a huge influence on several areas in industries. American gospel music-combination of Scottish influence too. Such strength in Scottish presence in America that 19 of 56 delegates who signed Declaration of Independence came from Scotland. Barack Obama may have Scottish ancestry.

Scottish Influence Highland gatherings throughout these colonies Burns clubs Caledonian societies. Scottish people heavy influence on the development; Andrew Carnegie (USA) and Lord Mount Stephen (Canadian Pacific Railway).

India Henry Dundas became President of Board of Control, he ‘Scoticised’ India. East India Company.. Scots came and began to dominate the activities of the company. By 1792 Scots made up one in nine EIC Civil servants. Scholars and scientists who also made important contributions too.

Religious Religious reasons to populate NZ. Otago settlement in the South Island and the Waipu settlement in the North Island were products of Scottish Ministers. Dunedin became capital and had a university in Waipu, Gaelic was the first language until the 1880s and was spoken until 1920s.

Army Highland regiments fought in many areas of the Empire. Europe, Canada and Asia.

Assault on the natives Aborigines Scots showed this when it came to land grabbing, as they were very vicious sometimes. Maori population fell from 150,000 in 1800 to 37,000 in 1872 as a result of struggle over land. Not always a pretty one, the story of conquest.

Africa David Livingstone inspired many others to follow him to Africa too. Mary Slessor, mill girl from Dundee, went; ‘where no white man had gone before’ and went to Nigeria. Brought religion and education to Africans. Important as educators, missionaries, admin and soldiers. p?strReferringChannel=higherscottishhistory&strReferringPageID=tcm:
